Evan Ferguson missed a penalty and the Republic of Ireland missed the chance to give interim head coach John O’Shea a notable scalp against Belgium.

The Brighton striker, who entered the squad without scoring a goal in 20 games for his club, saw his 28th-minute penalty saved by Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels to ensure the friendly match at a windy Aviva Stadium will finish 0-0.

Belgium enjoyed a greater proportion of possession, but Ireland created the better chances and debutant Sammie Szmodics went close on more than one occasion.

O’Shea will remain in charge of Tuesday’s friendly against Switzerland and will be pleased with the organization and effort of his players.

After the restart, Belgian coach Domenico Tedesco sent on Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku for Leandro Trossard, but the hosts came close within seconds.

Ferguson rose above the defense to meet Robbie Brady’s inviting cross from six yards out but was unable to contain his header.
