The Spanish non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras revealed, in its annual report, on Wednesday, that 2,390 migrants were killed heading to Spain in 2022, including 288 women and 101 children.

The deadliest Atlantic track

The organization described the path of migrants across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands as the deadliest for the fourth year in a row, despite the decline in the number of irregular migrants to Spain last year by 23 percent.

The organization had monitored the death of about 4,000 migrants who went missing while trying to reach the Canary Islands from northwest Africa in 2021, while the organization counted about 2,170 dead or missing in 2020.

The report linked the increase in the number of missing persons in the Atlantic Ocean route to immigration policies recently adopted by countries, which greatly impede the rescue of migrants and greatly tighten control in the Mediterranean.

The organization warned in its report that “the delay in reporting the missing boats, in addition to the dangerous path, puts migrants from North Africa in a very difficult situation.”

The bodies of 91% of the migrants have not been found and are therefore counted as missing.
