- Aston Villa fans asked Premier League referee Kevin Friend to wave to them
- He responded by giving them a yellow card, which made the Villa fans cheer

- Dean Smith’s side defeated Bristol City 3-0 in the preseason exhibition game on Saturday
Premier League referee Kevin Friend cheered Aston Villa fans after he jokingly gave them a yellow card in response to their request to wave them off.
The incident happened towards the end of Aston Villa’s exhibition game against Bristol City, which the Villains won 3-0.
At first the fans chanted ‘you’re just an asshole Mike Dean’ as Ashley Young got ready to take a free kick in Bristol City’s half, but that chant got a little more friendly as the fans ‘Kevin, give us a Wave’.
Premier League referee Kevin Friend spotted the funny side of Aston Villa’s chants
While they may have been expecting a wave, they got a warning instead! Friend jokingly handed out a yellow card, much to the delight of the fans.
And the fans can be thankful he went to the book – of all the Premier League referees who led last season, Friend has handed out the fewest yellow cards of those who have played in 25 or more games.
Ironically, Mike Dean handed out most of it. They both officiated in 25 games, with Dean handing out 93 warnings as opposed to Friend’s 59.
Aston Villa fan Sebastian Bacon shared the incident on Twitter, saying: ‘Today I received a yellow card from Kevin Friend’. Watch the video below:
