The Washington Redskins will be called the Washington Football Team for the 2020 season and will later decide on a permanent name change after dumping their old name on racism in a row.
In an announcement on Thursday, the team said, “We’ll quit our old name – and build a new kind of team. For the coming season, we call ourselves The Washington Football Team. ‘
The new logo is the word Washington with the ‘Football Team, EST 1932’ underneath. It replaces the old logo, which was of an Indian head.
Sponsors started asking for a name change earlier this year when the Black Lives Matter movement swept across America and knocked out everything considered historically racist.
The name Redskins was steeped in racism against Native Americans, according to critics, and was no longer bearable in the climate of equality by 2020.
The team vowed to change and took suggestions such as the Red Hawks, Red Wolves and the Washington Warriors.
