Reddit co-founder Ohanian, better known as tennis star Serena’s husband, leaves the board to find a black member

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian – better known as tennis star Serena Williams’ husband – called on Friday (June 5) to give his seat on the board of the social news company to a black candidate.

Ohanian said in an online post that he resigned from the Reddit board, which he co-founded 15 years ago.

He vowed that he would use future profits on his shares in the company to serve the black community, mainly by curbing racial hatred.

Ohanian has also pledged a million dollars to the Know Your Rights Camp of former NFL star Colin Kaepernick.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve done the right thing,” Ohanian said in a video posted online.

“I say this as a father who should be able to answer his black daughter when she asks’ What did you do? Ohanian and Williams were married three years ago and have one child.

“I believe that layoffs can be an act of leadership for those in power right now,” said 37-year-old Reddit co-founder.

“To anyone fighting to restore our broken nation, don’t stop.” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said in a blog post this week that the online bulletin board is investigating what it can do to give people a voice and instigate change when it comes to racial justice.

“We work for this platform because we care deeply about community and connectedness,” said Huffman.

“But community and solidarity are not possible without security from violence, and now it is time to show solidarity with the black members of our communities.”

Reddit quarantined a popular forum of supporters of President Donald Trump last year, claiming that users repeatedly violated platform rules by promoting violence.
