Scientists are on edge after Hawaii's Kilauea volcano began erupting early Monday morning

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano began erupting early Monday morning, with a webcam capturing the lava rising to the surface.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) issued a ‘code red’ at 7:41 a.m. ET after detecting increased earthquake activity below the summit.

Images of the “dynamic eruption” showed a row of fissures erupting from lava fountains feeding lava flows at the base of Halema’uma’u in Kaluapele (the summit caldera).

“Activity is limited to the summit caldera and hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses,” the USGS said in an announcement.

This is a developing story… More updates to follow.
