‘Rebel Moon’ will be released as two movies and will get a director’s cut, says Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder prepares for one Rebel moon universe.

At a first glance interview with Vanity Fair Published Tuesday, the director shared his expanding plans for his latest project with Netflix, a concept Snyder has been considering since college. The sci-fi adventure, arriving on streamer December 22, follows a woman (Sofia Boutella) with a mysterious past who is sent out by a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy to search for warriors after society is threatened by the armies. of the tyrant.

But the project will actually be two movies after the writer-director talked to Netflix about his 72-page script, which translated into a nearly three-hour movie.

“(Netflix movie boss Scott) Stuber was like, ‘On the service, movies under two hours really do do better for some reason,’ even though you’re going to binge-watch an eight-episode series,” Deborah Snyder , producer of Zack partner and wife, says. Zack said, “If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’ll lose all my character.” You will not care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption and what are you willing to fight for…” So he said, “What if I two movies?'”

As a result, the $166 million movie – which one Vanity Fair reports of the film’s estimated cost based on California tax returns – will be split into two parts, though the second film’s release date remains unclear. Zack Snyder says he was looking for part two to be released “on the heels” of part one. ‘It won’t be long after that. Netflix can do things that a traditional studio can’t, in terms of how closely the movies are released,” he notes.

In addition to the two-part film, he is also getting ready to release two parts of the film, with the director taking longer. The first version will explore the fantasy adventure in a way “for everyone to enjoy and watch”, while the other version will be aimed at adults and Snyder’s superfans. “I think fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that will be fun for them,” he says.

Details about how Snyder built his universe were also revealed during the interview. In addition to the film’s expected effects, the director built an actual village in the Santa Clarita Gorge outside of Los Angeles. That includes “an abandoned full-size starfighter lures not far from what appears to be an idyllic Scandinavian-style village complete with clusters of houses, shops and barns, as well as a stone bridge arching over a crystalline river” – the last of which was built by production – as well as real wheat fields in the desert.
