Real Madrid’s swoop for Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger is the perfect deal for the Spanish giants

Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger attack is their perfect deal: bolster their defence, unlock David Alaba’s versatility… and keep money for Kylian Mbappe – so here’s how they can line up

  • Antonio Rüdiger to leave Chelsea when his contract expires this season
  • Real Madrid are ready to sign the German international in the summer period
  • It’s a smart move by Real as the deal has a knock-on effect on the squad

Real Madrid believe they have the perfect combination in Antonio Rudiger – a fiercely competitive winner and a free transfer.

The club sees the Chelsea man as David Alaba this summer and the Austrian combines those same qualities in last year’s preparation.

While some clubs are targeting expensive additions to the center of their defense (Seville duo Jules Koude and Diego Carlos are likely to spark a mini-bid war this summer), and Barcelona looking for a free transfer but concentrating on ball-playing centre-backs such as Like Andreas Christensen, Madrid wants someone who can fit in with a frugal spending plan for nearly everyone who isn’t Kylian Mbappe, and someone who they believe has the club’s winning mentality.

The bonus for them will also be that it will unlock David Alaba’s versatility and avoid scenarios like this Tuesday night at the Etihad when they may be without Casemiro and not really have an obvious option to replace him.

Alaba is more than happy in midfield and he can play left-back, so with Rudiger able to team up with Eder Militao, he can now replace both the Brazilian midfielder and Ferland Mendy, who have struggled with fitness this season.

Another freebie means that all funds go to Mbappe’s treasury. At least it will be if he decides to take what could end up being a record-breaking signing from Real Madrid and not Paris Saint-Germain. Madrid remains convinced that he will.

Madrid also buys one midfielder. Spending a lot of money on Mbappe rules out a successful bid for Borussia Dortmund’s English midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Madrid have a good relationship with Dortmund, who have loaned Achraf Hakimi and Reinier Jesus in the past, but Monaco’s 22-year-old midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is likely to be more approachable.

The German club will not have to sell after transferring Erling Haaland to Manchester City and Bellingham has a contract until 2025.

Massive midfield spending will not be the priority when Rudiger arrives and there is the opportunity to move Alaba forward. There is a lot of confidence in Eduardo Camavinga’s ability to keep improving as well.

He is part of a group of young players, along with Vinicius, Fede Valverde and Rodrygo, who are seen as the future of the club. Their youth does mean that experience is another thing valued in new recruits.

Rudiger is a player who left Germany when he was only 22. He won a Champions League and convinced three of the best coaches in Europe: Joachim Low, Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel.

He’s not a gamble, he’s just another in a long line of cunning moves in the market. Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic aside, it really feels like Madrid haven’t put a foot ring on signings for a long time.
