Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has revealed that he was close to signing for Barcelona for the first El Clasico of the season.
The Spain international joined Madrid in 2014 as an 18-year-old child prodigy after creating a furore in Mallorca.
But the midfielder has now admitted that he could have joined Madrid’s biggest rivals and played for the other team on Saturday.

In an interview with LIKE, asked if it is true that he could have signed for Barca, Asensio said: ‘Yes, I could have, but also at other clubs.
‘There are always great clubs that are interested and ask about your situation. When I signed up for Madrid it all went very fast, the treatment was spectacular and they showed incredible interest.
“When that opportunity presents itself, it’s impossible to say no.”
The 24-year-old also confirmed that Madrid’s interest around him was prompted by a tip from tennis icon Rafael Nadal, who is also a strong supporter of the club.
The 24-year-old, who played in Madrid’s last game against Shakhtar, joined the club in 2014
He added: ‘Rafa really likes football and Madrid. His uncle was part of the sports direction in Mallorca.
He called and said: “There is a very good boy who has to play for Madrid”. It was me and that’s how it started. ‘
Fitness issues have prevented Asensio’s career from taking off, but the Spaniard is working his way back to Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
Asensio has played in all of Madrid’s last four games and is likely to play a role in Saturday’s game with arch-rival Barcelona.
