Zinedine Zidane has kept his faith in Karim Benzema throughout pre-season and it was rewarded on Wednesday as he hit a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 5-3 win against Fenerbahce.

The Spanish giants managed to take third place in the Audi Cup after the goal-heavy clash at the Allianz Arena.

Benzema was at the centre of the action though, hitting three, with Nacho and Mariano also bagging for Real.

Real’s bad pre-season initially seemed to take another downward turn after Gary Rodrigues put Fenerbahce ahead in the first 10 minutes, but Benzema soon levelled the game, turning the ball home from close range.

And then the French striker leaped highest from a free-kick from the right in the 27th minute to head past Altay Bayindir and find the bottom corner.

Vinicius Junior missed a chance to send Real further ahead from an Eden Hazard pull-back, striking the ball over the bar, and the youngster would regret it minutes later.

With 34 minutes on the clock, Fenerbahce broke forward and, courtesy of a deflection, Nabil Dirar’s strike from the edge of the area flew past Keylor Navas.

The Turkish side then ended the first-half stronger, although a series of moves that seemed to threaten Navas’ net would ultimately break down on the edge of the box.

Yet Real responded after the break and Benzema kept up his hot form in front of goal. Lucas Vazquez, a half-time substitute, swung in a cross from the right and Benzema nodded in.

The goalscoring did not end there though. In the 59th minute, Ozan Tufan picked up the ball in Real’s half before bending a spectacular long-range shot into the top corner.

They were not level for long. Just three minutes later, Bayindir spilled a shot from the edge of the box and Nacho latched onto the rebound, knocking it in.

Real then wrapped up the win when Mariano latched onto a ball into the middle of the box and smashed a shot into the back of the net.
