RAY MASSEY: Genesis offers a business class service at economical prices

Parked in the new Genesis G70, I was often approached by fascinated bystanders who wanted to know what it was and how much it cost.

That’s because the new sedan from the premium branch of the Korean Hyundai Group looks fantastic. Smart, sophisticated and a little flashy. It’s full of kit.

There is certainly a nod to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Bentley. Just look at the large grille.

But it’s a tempting package that offers value for money. It’s comfortable inside, the navigation system is good and the digital dashboard nicely combines the right buttons and dials.

This was the first diesel car I had driven in some time and it was very enjoyable. As I clocked a few hundred miles, I had to keep checking the barely shifting fuel dial to make sure the gauge wasn’t stuck.

In one phase of not particularly fuel efficient driving, I got over 55 mpg, although with more involved driving I hovered around 45 mpg. Are we missing a trick here? It seems that there is still life in the old diesel dog.

Price is also an interesting subject, as prices for the G70 start at a tempting £33,850 for the 2-litre T petrol version in Premium Line, rising to £39,300 for Luxury Line and £40,480 for Sport Line.

The equivalent Euro6D 2.2-litre diesel starts at £35,860, rising to £38,510 for the Luxury Line – which I drove – and £40,030 for the Sport Line.

My car was also loaded with a further £8,000 in extras, including £1,130 for the striking Bond Silver paint job; £960 for the sunroof; £3,250 for a high-tech innovation package; £1,850 for the luxury Comfort Seat package; £790 for the Lexicon Audi system. This brought the final price to £46,490.

My G70 had good speed and went from rest to 100 mph in 7.2 seconds to a top speed of 143 mph.

And there are clever safety twists. My favorite is a live rear view on the dash, so you can see what’s behind, left, or right when you indicate.

Genesis has a slew of new cars coming to the market and it’s exciting because the company certainly offers a business class service at premium economy prices.

Beaulieu launches exhibition 007

The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu is launching a new exhibit featuring cars, gadgets and costumes from the latest 007 film.

The Bond in Motion: No Time To Die exhibition opens on October 15, shortly after the film’s UK release on September 30.

It’s the first chance to see the folding-wing glider from the film as a full-size model, which will be suspended over the iconic Aston Martin DB5 (doing donuts above) complete with new LED license plate and machine guns as powered by Daniel Craig.

Also featured is the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, driven in the film by new agent Nomi.

Four-wheel drive fans will love Bond’s Land Rover Series III and the Land Rover Defender 110.

Leon wins top towing prize

Attention caravan and trailer fans: The sunny Leon Estate FR from Spanish car company Seat, pictured, has just been crowned Tow Car of the Year 2021.

The practical 150 hp 1.5-litre TSI won the award yesterday at the awards organized by the Caravan and Motorhome Club at the Royal Automobile Club in London.

The car also triumphed in its caravan towing section in the 1,100kg to 1,200kg category after 32 vehicles rounded the auto industry’s UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground.

Vehicles were tested on a variety of road types, including speeds of up to 55 mph on an alpine route.

Judges tested whether car trunks could swallow the bulky accessories normally required during a caravan trip, and conducted a large number of technical and tensile tests.
