Liotta was perhaps best known for his incredible performance in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 classic Goodfellas, where he played Henry Hill alongside Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

The film — which premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990 — follows Hill’s rise and fall as a mob operative from 1955 to 1980.

The film was a critical success, earning six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Pesci, 79, winning Supporting Actor and Martin Scorsese, 79, receiving his third Best Director nomination.

Lorraine Bracco, 67, who played Liotta’s wife in the mafia film, paid tribute to her former co-star on Twitter, writing: “I am utterly shocked to hear this terrible news about my Ray.”

“I can be anywhere in the world and people come up to me and tell me their favorite movie is Goodfellas. Then they always ask what was the best thing about making that movie. My reaction has always been the same… Ray Liotta,” she wrote.
