Ravens linebacker who died under questionable circumstances cause of death is yet to be determined’

The family of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson, who died suddenly Tuesday night, released a statement in an effort to quell speculation about the 26-year-old’s cause of death.

In a message from Ferguson’s fiancé, Doni Smith read on social media ‘despite speculation in previous reports, at this time the cause of Jaylon’s death has not been determined’.

Police have said there were no signs of trauma or foul play, although they do not rule out “the possibility of an overdose” in Ferguson’s “dubious death”.

Ferguson was found unconscious in a Baltimore home. Doctors at the scene tried to resuscitate him, but he could not be saved.

“This is one of the darkest moments of our lives and we are still utterly shocked. We ask that you respect our privacy as we navigate this difficult time,” Smith wrote in the statement.

“On June 21, 2022, at approximately 11:25 p.m., Northern District patrol officers arrived at a house on the 400-block of Ilchester Avenue with a report of a questionable death,” Baltimore police said.

“Once there, officers found 26-year-old Jaylon Ferguson, who was unresponsive while being treated by medics. Ferguson never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead by medics at the scene. No signs of trauma or crime have been found at this time.”

His body was taken to the coroner’s office early Wednesday, where the cause of death will be determined.

“He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and an infectious personality,” the team said of the star, who is entering his fourth year in the NFL.

On Wednesday, The Ravens announced Ferguson’s death in a statement on Twitter.

“It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the unexpected passing of our beloved Jaylon Ferguson. Jaylon was a loving father, son, brother, fiancée and an exceptional athlete.

His kindness, big heart and infectious personality will be missed by so many, but his legacy will live on. We appreciate the phone calls, texts and messages of support from his many friends and fans after learning of this tragedy.”

Police say the cause of death has yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, fiancé Smith, with whom Ferguson shared three young children, tweeted: ‘God, this is killing me baby!!! Rest in paradise my king!!! I miss you very much.’

Their firstborn, four-year-old son Jyce, arrived in November 2017, while second child Jrea, a girl, arrived in May 2019.

Last year, Smith wrote that she’s “expecting another sweet baby” — and since then, she’s given birth to another girl for the third time.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d say RIP to you,” Smith captioned a photo of her hugging her late loved one while pregnant with one of their children.

“My soul hurts so much, honey. I know I’m dreaming baby… please watch over us! Please,” she added.

The father of three had earned himself a spot in the Baltimore ball club roster. His death comes as a shock to NFL fans and members of the league.

Ferguson was reportedly in the best shape of his career and participated in all of the team’s offseason practices over the past three months. Coaches said the star – who saw plenty of playing time last season – had also lost a ton.

Ferguson, nicknamed ‘Sack Daddy’, was drafted in the third round by the Ravens in 2019 and played with them his entire pro career. He played in 38 games and had 4 1/2 sacks.

“Jaylon was a kind hearted, gentle person who loved his family and his team. He was a joy to talk to and be around every day,” Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. ‘You always wanted to see and speak to ‘Ferg’. Our prayers and help go out to his family.”

“The LA Tech Family mourns the tragic news of the sudden death of former Bulldog great Jaylon Ferguson,” the Louisiana Tech football program tweeted. “We will remember his God-given talents on the field and his infectious personality off. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Ferguson made nine rookie starts for the Ravens in 2019, and he also started the team’s only playoff game that season.

The linebacker was on the COVID-19 roster early last season, but ended up appearing in 10 games.

“Me and ‘Ferg’ went through the same struggles when it came to making a name for themselves in the league,” said linebacker Tyus Bowser.

‘We have been able to gain understanding from that and help each other build and grow as players. From the script to the field – and even outside of work – we’ve built a strong bond with each other. Whether I was having a bad day or vice versa, we encouraged each other and that’s what I appreciated the most and what I will miss about him.”

The Ravens finished mini camp last week and are off until training camp. Wednesday was a tragic day for the franchise, with the news that both Ferguson and former defensive tackle Tony Siragusa had passed away.

“J Ferg” had the most genuine energy I’ve ever had,” said Safety Tony Jefferson. “Before I left the locker room after the mini camp, he told me he was ready for a big year and I believed it was going to be his best season as Raven. He will watch over us, I know that, and he will bring the team closer together, just from his starting point.”
