Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
The two-time Cy Young winner is set to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the partial ligament and will be out until at least the middle of 2024.
He signed a massive five-year, $185 million deal with Texas that included a sixth-year option that could take the deal to $222 million in free agency this year.
“It stinks,” deGrom said, arms crossed and stopping occasionally. “It’s not ideal.”
“When you’re told you can’t be out there doing something you love, it’s hard. We have a special group of guys here and I want to be able to be out there and help them. It’s a disappointment.

DeGrom signed a whopping five-year, $185 million deal with Texas in free agency this year

Even while in New York, deGrom often struggled to stay off the injured list for years.
deGrom had already been diagnosed with inflammation before his troublesome right elbow put him on the injured list.
The future 35-year-old has made just five starts this season and hasn’t started since April 28.
“The latest footage shows we’ve backed off,” said general manager Chris Young. “There is now structural damage. And that’s significant compared to what we saw originally where there was inflammation.
Back when Young and Rangers handed deGrom the massive long-term free agency deal, many in the league looked at the situation with a raised eyebrow due to the four-time All-Star’s long injury history. star before leaving the New York Mets.
Considering this is also deGrom’s second surgery for Tommy John, it will be interesting to see how the remaining four years and $155 million remaining on his contract work out.
Mets ace Jacob Verlander who replaced deGrom in the New York rotation commented on the injury, saying, “Anyone who’s a baseball fan just wants to see Jake healthy and go pitching.”
“A few years ago you could see what he can do, stringing together a couple of healthy seasons. Everyone would like to see this again, including me. He is special.
