A massive survey of Australians by recruitment agency Randstad has named the top 10 most desirable places to work, and there are some very surprising employers on the list.

The wide-ranging survey surveyed 6,105 people between the ages of 18 and 65, with a slight emphasis on those under 40, as the survey’s main target audience is potential employees.

Employers (both private and public) that scored highest had financial stability, career progression, good salaries, and were conveniently located.

Half of the top 10 were government organizations (including some that the public often complain about, such as Australia Post and Transport for NSW) and the other half are private companies, such as Deloitte, which comes in first place in the ranking.

Insurance Australia Group, the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice, Virgin Australia, G8 Education, NSW Health, Healthscope and the Queensland Government completed the list of top employers.

According to the Randstad Workmonitor survey, the top 10 employers in Australia by 2024 are:

1 Deloitte

Pip Dexter, Deloitte Australia’s director of people and purpose, said the company was proud to be considered the most attractive place to work.

“We know our people come to Deloitte to do meaningful work, develop their skills, learn from others and develop their careers,” he said. 9News.

“Our continued commitment to inclusion and equity creates an environment where people can thrive, ideally in both work and life.”

2 Australian Insurance Group

Deloitte was followed by Insurance Australia Group, meaning private employers took the top two spots, unlike 2023 when public sector employers ranked higher.

3 New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice

The highest ranked public employer, and third overall, was the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).

DCJ chief of staff Catherine Carvolth said it showed his employees trusted him.

“We want to recognize the 24,000 employees who make DCJ an attractive and purposeful place to work,” he said.

“We are determined to maintain our reputation as an attractive employer and strive to make DCJ an even better place to work in the years to come.”

In March, Virgin Australia announced it will become the country’s first airline to allow pets on board so they can travel with their owners.

The company is also considered a good employer and ranks fourth in the Randstad survey.

5 G8 Education

G8 Education is Australia’s largest ASX-listed early childhood and care provider, with over 430 childcare centres.

6 Australia Post

Australia Post sometimes gets a lot of criticism from the public, but for its 63,000 employees, it’s a good place to work anyway.

7 Transport for New South Wales

Transport for NSW, which oversees bus and train transport in Australia’s most populous state, often leaves commuters unimpressed.

But those who work there, according to the survey, see it as a stable and rewarding place to work.

8 New South Wales Health

NSW Health is ranked the eighth best place to work in Australia, which is high praise for a body that often bore the brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic.
