Ramraiders break into Finchampstead shop with van, awakening neighbours before the police arrive

Ram raiders made so much noise during a break-in at a convenience store in the Berkshire village of Finchampstead that they woke the neighbors before being arrested on the spot.

Several local residents called police after hearing a van drive out of a window and security bars at the One Stop store on Wednesday.

The thieves smashed a large pane of glass before attaching ropes around the frame and using a white Checkatrade van to yank it from the storefront.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said on Thursday evening: ‘At around 11.47pm on Wednesday, officers were called to a shop in Barkham Ride by some members of the public, with reports suggesting trespassers were attempting to gain access to the shop using a van.

Officers attended and arrested two men, aged 27 and 30, both from Surrey. They have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently detained.

“An investigation is underway.”

Passers-by said the store had been looted as the thieves searched for cigarettes and bottles of liquor.

The same store had been rammed and broken into on a number of previous occasions, but this was thought to be the first time robbers had been arrested while committing the crime in the store.
