Rami Malek recalled an incident in which he was allegedly racially profiled by the Los Angeles Police Department in the past.

The Mr. Robot star, 43, who is currently dating The Crown alum Emma Corrin, opened up about the “precarious situation” during a recent interview with The guardian.

The topic came up while the Oscar winner was discussing issues of mistaken identity.

“They threw me on the hood of an LAPD police car because someone had robbed a liquor store and stole a woman’s purse,” Malek told the outlet.

The actor, who was born in California to Egyptian immigrants, added: “They said (the thief) was of Latin descent and ‘you fit the description.’

‘I remember how hot the engine was, they must have been running there and it almost burned my hands. My friend, who was Caucasian, was smart enough to say, “Actually, sir, he’s Egyptian. Not Latin.”

“I remember laughing in the police car and thinking, ‘Okay, this is a very precarious situation. “I may go to jail for something I didn’t do.”

Rami did not elaborate on the incident and what happened next in The Guardian’s cover story.

However, he also spoke about experiencing racial discrimination at the airport and how his full name Rami Said Malek would set off security alarms.

“I started thinking, ‘What’s going on?’ every time I tried to enter a country. These days, there might be a moment. Then they’ll say, ‘No, that’s the guy from Bohemian Rhapsody.’ “Let it go.”

The star also recalled growing up in the US and said his father partially embraced the culture, “but there was also a clear… I won’t say alienating from certain aspects of the culture, but definitely not accepting them.”

Of being aware of feeling different and not quite fitting in, Rami shared, “I don’t know how you can get over that.”

“I’m what’s called a ‘white step,’ but I have very distinctive features and we definitely don’t fit in,” the Bohemian Rhapsody actor continued.

Malek has been preparing for a busy 2025 and will star in Sophocles’ tragedy Oedipus from January 21 to March 29.

The official opening night will be on February 6 at the Old Vic Theater in the heart of London.

The production will also star Indira Varma and will be co-directed by Matthew Warchus and Hofesh Shechter.

The premise is as follows: “King Oedipus, who is tasked by his subjects with avenging the murder of the old king Laius in the hope that an oracle’s prophecy will be fulfilled,” according to Program.

Malek will also make his London stage debut in the highly anticipated production, which was adapted by playwright Ella Hickson.

During an interview with FashionRami reflected on his return to the stage after 18 years and in London, where he currently resides with his partner Emma Corrin.

“There’s something about being able to go to the Tate, the RA or the Barbican, and the National and the BFI, that reminds you of what brought you here in the first place.”

He added: I have been working in this country for quite some time and have literally fallen in love with it. Curiously, I feel at home here.

When asked what had kept him from returning to the stage for almost two decades, Rami admitted: “A little fear.”

Malek continued, “I can get hands-on with work in all iterations of the production.”

“I’ll be with my partner and they’ll say, ‘Leave it. Just take a moment. You don’t have to produce and try to direct everything yourself. Let things evolve…”‘

‘I consider myself an intuitive person. I collaborate. There is no greater feeling than a collective feeling of success, or if it’s shit we feel it together and laugh about it.

The actor added: “But if there is an opportunity to achieve something, I leave no stone unturned.” And I think sometimes that could be detrimental.”

His co-star, Indira, chimed in to add that there can be a lack of control in theater, sharing, “At the end we’ll put it on and there will be people who will say, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen.'”

‘And there will be people who will say: “What a load of rubbish.” It’s out of our hands. That’s the exciting thing about creating and telling stories: audience members have to bring a lot of themselves to fill those gaps.’

Malek also took on a lead role in the upcoming action thriller, The Amateur, which will be released later this year on April 11, 2025.

The premise is: “A CIA cryptographer manages to blackmail his agency into training him and allowing him to hunt down a group of terrorists who killed his wife,” according to a Official synopsis from IMDB.

The star-studded cast also includes Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitriona Balfe and Jon Bernthal.
