Karen Allen, star of the classic film Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981), has emerged in defense of the age difference between her character Marion Ravenwood and her beloved Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford.
In recent years, the reunion scene, where the age difference is insinuated, has been scrutinized enough to make Allen public and declare that Indy is “not a pedophile.”
in the scene, Marion punches Indy and says, “I’ve learned to hate you over the past 10 years.” After explaining how he never meant to hurt her, she replies, ‘I was a kid! I was in love! It was wrong and you knew it,” To which Indy shoots back, “You knew what you were doing.”
After the insinuation that Marion was a minor a decade ago, the subject never came up again in the film, leaving some viewers wondering what had happened between the two and how old her character was.
Underage Chatter: Karen Allen Clarified Her Raiders Of The Lost Ark Character Marion Ravenwood’s Relationship With Indiana Jones And Controlling Their Age Difference
During an interview with uproxxAllen weighed in and revealed the age she thought her character was during their first relationship.
‘I think you could say’ [there are sinister undertones]Allen said while promoting the 40th anniversary of the film’s 4K Blu-ray release.
“I think I say I was 16. I do not know. That’s what I’ve always imagined, she was 16, he was 26. And he was her father’s student. And it remains very mysterious,” said Allen, 69, before sharing some possible scenarios about their past.
“We don’t even know what it is,” the actress continued.
“I mean, they could’ve kissed a few times, and she was just totally blown away, and he just wouldn’t have wanted to deal with someone so young. And maybe my father would have been furious with him.’

Allen, who would reprise her role in the fourth film in the franchise – Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008), thinks it’s an advantage to have so much mystery behind their relationship.
“I mean, the great thing is we don’t know what the circumstances are. So she obviously cared a lot about him. He may have taken care of her too. But eventually decided it was a dangerous situation and he didn’t want to be involved.”
She went on to say that if something is this vague, ‘you can color it however you want.’
“I’ve had a tendency to color it in such a way that it was pretty harmless,” Allen explained.
‘When she [Marion] says, “It was wrong and you knew it.” I mean, I think he may have guided her somehow. But when she says she was a kid, I think she meant she was 16. Something like that.’
Allen concluded, “I don’t consider him a pedophile. That’s the direction some of these people are going.’

Transcripts of the story conferences between Steven Spielberg (director), George Lucas (co-creator of the Indiana Jones story), and Lawrence Kasdan (screenwriter) have been circulated on social media in recent years. In it, they discussed the two characters with a big age difference and that Indy could have been in a relationship with Marion when she was a minor.
Shooting for the highly anticipated fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise has started in England this week after delays due to COVID-19.
Ford, 78, and his fedora are back as the reckless archaeologist and professor with Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the supporting cast.
