Rafael Nadal showed that there was enough life left in the 17-time Major champion with an impressive straight sets victory over James Duckworth.
The Spaniard was on his sparkling best to silence a partial home crowd and defeat the home favorite 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.
The 31-year-old had to withdraw from the Brisbane International earlier this month with a thigh problem, but lost the fear of an injury.
It was an encouraging start to 2019 for Nadal after being limited to only nine tournaments last year due to a series of injuries including ankle operation in November.
