Rafael Nadal has raised further concerns about his future after announcing his withdrawal from the Laver Cup.

The 38-year-old said he feels “there are other players who can help the team achieve victory.”

Nadal said: ‘I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week.

“This is a team competition and to really support the European team I need to do my best for them and at the moment there are other players who can help the team to victory.”

Nadal’s last action was at the Paris Olympics, when he played alongside Carlos Alcaraz and was defeated in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles by the American duo of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.

He continued: ‘I have so many wonderful and emotional memories of playing in the Laver Cup and I was really looking forward to being with my team-mates and Bjorn (Borg) in his final year as captain.

“I wish the European team the best of luck and I will be cheering them on from afar.”

Nadal has enjoyed an illustrious career that has included winning 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including 14 French Open titles.

However, he has had frequent problems with injuries in recent years and is currently ranked number 158 in the world.

This year he only competed in one of the four major tournaments: the French Open, where he was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the first round.

Nadal considered retiring after losing to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Olympic singles tournament.

At the end of July, she said: “I’m trying to look ahead. I’ve given myself up to the Olympics.”

‘When this tournament is over I will make the necessary decisions based on my feelings and desires. It is difficult to recover if I am thinking about whether I will retire.

‘For many people it doesn’t make much sense, I’ve been suffering for two years.

‘If I feel like I’m not competitive, I make the decision to stop. I just try to do my best every day, trying to enjoy something that I’ve been enjoying for so long.

‘I’ve had a lot of injuries over the last two years.

‘So if I feel like I’m not competitive enough to continue or I’m not physically ready to continue, I’ll stop and let them know.’
