Everton have a big week on and off the pitch this week as they have their bottom of the table clash with Crystal Palace and the verdict on their 10-point deduction appeal.

Everton are expected to know this week the fate of their appeal regarding a 10-point deduction they received in November for breaching Premier League spending rules.

The Toffees were handed the toughest and highest-points penalty in Premier League history after they were found to have exceeded allowable losses under the league’s profitability and sustainability (PSR) rules in the three seasons to 2021-22. , but they immediately indicated that they would appeal.

Sean Dyche’s side currently sit 18th in the Premier League table, one point behind Luton Town and from safety ahead of their eminent bottom-of-the-table clash with Crystal Palace, which would see the Toffees exit from the relegation zone if they achieved a victory.

Everton will be slightly optimistic that they can get a win against Palace tonight, considering they are the only team they have beaten in their last 11 consecutive games.

But when can we expect to hear the outcome of Everton’s appeal? Mail Sport take a look.

When will Everton know the verdict of their appeal?

Everton are expected to know the faith of their points deduction appeal in the next 48 hours, according to Sky Sports presenter David Jones.

If the verdict favors the Merseyside team, they will be returned the 10 points that will significantly help them in their fight against relegation.

On the other hand, if the verdict remains the same, not only is the deduction still in effect but the likelihood increases that they could see a second points deduction before the season comes to an end in May.

A positive verdict would help Everton enormously in their fight against relegation.

Why did Everton get a 10-point deduction?

Everton received a 10-point deduction in November 2023 as a three-person independent commission found the club guilty of breaching the Premier League’s sustainability and profits rules.

The charges were brought against the Toffees after they recorded losses in excess of £105m over a three-year period ending in 2022.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Premier League clubs’ accounts for 2020 and 2021 have been averaged as part of the three-year calculation.

It was reported that Everton likely cited the construction of their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium as one of the main reasons for the overspending.

What did Sean Dyche say?

Toffees boss Dyche was surprised Everton received the ban in November, calling it “disproportionate”.

“I think like everyone else, certainly in this area, I was shocked and apparently because of the wave of noise that followed that, most people in football are shocked by the enormity of this,” Dyche said.

‘Disproportionate is a word used by the club. Obviously we feel a little aggrieved by that, but on the other hand it doesn’t change the approach. “The goal since I got there is to fix things on the field, get the team to win.”

Sean Dyche's team were hit with sanctions in November for breaching spending rules, before a second charge came in January.

Sean Dyche’s team were hit with sanctions in November for breaching spending rules, before a second charge came in January.

Now Dyche just wants the saga to end and for the powers that be to “move on” because “everyone in football wants to know what’s going on.”

“At the moment we’re just focusing on the appeal and what that will bring and the reality,” Dyche added. “Who knows what the appeal or the second situation will bring?”

What about the second set of charges they face?

Everton were hit with a second charge for breaching the Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR) on January 15.

The Toffees, along with fellow Premier League players Nottingham Forest, have been referred to an independent commission which will consider the alleged breaches.

If charges are found, Everton could face further point deductions which would increase the likelihood of relegation this season.

Everton were quick to counter these charges by alleging double jeopardy, arguing that the latest charge brought by the Premier League relates to a period covering the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons and, therefore, Therefore, it includes economic periods (2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22) for which the club has already received a 10-point penalty.
