Britain said its Typhoon fighter jets intercepted two Russian maritime patrol bomber planes in international airspace north of Scotland on Monday, within NATO’s northern air surveillance area.

“The pilots launched their Typhoon aircraft to intercept two long-range Russian bombers this morning, monitoring them as they passed north of the Shetland Islands, ready to counter any potential threat to UK soil,” the armed forces minister said. British, James Heappey.

The fighter jets took off from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray to monitor the flight path of Russian Tu-142 Bear-F and Tu-142 Bear-J jets.

These Russian aircraft are packed with a variety of communications and reconnaissance equipment that make them highly adept at monitoring underwater activity.

It is the latest incident of Russian military aircraft flying anywhere near British airspace, and the RAF’s top fighter pilots have intercepted Russian fighter jets more than 50 times in just four months.
