Marty Sheargold has resigned from Melbourne’s Triple M Melbourne Breakfast slot following a mysterious three-month absence and last year’s AFL Grand Final “incident”.

Triple M confirmed the news on Thursday morning, stating that the 53-year-old comedian and radio host will not be returning to the breakfast show, but will continue with his podcast and his 3pm national slot with the network.

“Taking an extended break at the end of last year reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family,” Sheargold said in a statement.

“As a result, I have made the decision to prioritise self-care, maintain a better work-life balance and will not be returning to my Triple M Breakfast show. However, I will continue to run The Marty Sheargold Show podcast, alongside the national Triple M 3-4pm show.”

He continued: “I would like to thank my immediate team and the network for their continued support and understanding. And I would also like to thank the listeners for their loyalty to both the show and the station. Like them, I remain a fan of Triple M.”

Dave Cameron, SCA’s Chief Content Officer, said: ‘SCA supports Marty’s decision to rebalance his personal and work commitments, and we would like to thank Marty and his team for creating a unique and fun breakfast show for Melbourne from 2021.

‘However, it’s exciting that our listeners will continue to hear Marty alongside his current team of Troy Ellis, Loren Barry and Will Ralston on the Triple M network as a national evening radio show and on his fan-favourite daily podcast on LiSTNR, which regularly features highly on the Australian Podcast Ranker.’

The former breakfast presenter took a ‘personal leave’ after a Alleged incident at AFL Grand Final last year in September, which saw him leave at half-time.

After returning to the show in January following a three-month break, some listeners called his return to the airwaves “unfunny” and “disgusting.”

In a Reddit thread from April, several commented on Sheargold’s on-air antics and offered their opinions.

“He’s gotten even more of a bastard since he came back. That evil bastard wouldn’t dare say half the stupid things he tells callers if he was in the studio,” said one.

“I agree with you, it has gotten worse since his crisis and recovery,” wrote another.

“I feel like she’s improved a lot lately, but judging by other people’s comments, it doesn’t seem that way,” another person said.

“All the jokes are crap. After hearing them for a while, you get tired of them,” commented another.

“I feel like he used to be funny but now he seems to just insult people without any visible joke involved,” another said.

“I have no idea how he got his own show, he’s a black man at best, not a host, and he’s run by the rest of his team. The guy reads the headlines from the paper, guys with good money could put a little effort into their segments,” another person said.

However, others disagreed, with one saying: “It’s no different than normal. ‘Evil’ is part of his discourse.”

The embattled Melbourne radio host said he took an “extended break” because he had become “burned out”.

“I realized that I had completely burned out over the last few years,” he explained.

He was reportedly ejected by MCG security over offensive comments he made to other guests.

He went on to say he was inspired by AFL coaches Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick, who both stepped down from their respective football teams last year.

“Last year, two guys put their hands up and said, ‘I need a break.’ And I thought, ‘I need a break,'” Sheargold said.

“Things are changing. I’m not going to stick to a routine this year,” she added, to which her producer Loren Barry replied: “You’re just doing what you want.”

Marty then made a strange joke, saying, “I’m going to make love, too. It’ll be fun, so stay there for that. Watch the wheels fall off.”

Late last year, Southern Cross Austereo confirmed that Sheargold would be returning to radio in January after taking three months off air for a “mental health break”.

He was reportedly ejected by MCG security over offensive comments he made to other guests.

When asked for comment, a Southern Cross Austereo spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: “Marty Sheargold left the AFL Grand Final at half-time of his own volition.”

Sheargold was on air the week after the Grand Final, but disappeared a few days later, leading to Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann replacing him.
