Radio 2 star DJ Spoony has revealed he was hospitalized over Christmas and required emergency brain surgery.

He shared the news in an Instagram post on Monday along with a selection of photos of himself during the process.

DJ Spoony, 54, received support from friends and loved ones, including Davina McCall, who recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor.

The DJ, whose real name is John St John Joseph BEM, revealed that doctors discovered he had a subdural hematoma (in the brain) after he complained of a headache that lasted for a month.

He shared on social media: “That was one of the best Christmases” I’ve ever had. I am very grateful for everything he showed me. For everything I have. For all the love, hugs and… love.

‘So…I had a headache for 3/4 weeks and went to A&E to get it checked out on Saturday the 21st. (I rarely get them)

‘They did some tests on me and said they wanted to do a CT scan. The scan showed that I had a small bleed on the brain (which had stopped bleeding) which was causing some pressure on the brain, hence the headaches.’

DJ Spoony continued: “They said they were referring me to Adenbrooks because they needed to have surgery as soon as possible. Crazy to have been working and training solidly during the entire time of the headaches.

‘I was in the hospital for 4 nights and finally had surgery on 24.12 at 2am. By their very high standards, it was a routine operation to fix my subural hematoma. 10 minutes after the operation he was already back in the room. Fully alert. Chatting. Not stunned after the general.

‘I couldn’t wait to have that banana next to my bed as I hadn’t had a mouthful since 1pm the previous day. That was the best banana I’ve ever had…as for the ginger shot. Perfect.

‘What was crazy was that the headache disappeared instantly. 4 weeks of this heartbeat and finally peace above.

‘I woke up on Christmas morning in the hospital. I was very grateful. I had something special to look forward to. Return home to my family and friends. Everyone who had been amazing over the past few days. The visits, support, calls, messages. Very humiliating.

‘However, there was some sadness in waking up close to some people who didn’t know where they were, who would have spent much, if not all, of the day without their loved ones. I think about all of them every day and hope they are making progress in their recovery.

‘Here are some fragments captured from those 4 days. They didn’t think I’d be home until later that day, so I thought I’d surprise them all. Laura’s face was (is) a delight

‘Thank you to Bedford Hospital for the scan and Addenbrokes for completing the task. You really are the best in the business. All the nurses, doctors, health assistants who cared for me. Thanks to the NHS. Thank you Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot and Mo Salah.

‘Radio today at 2pm, will you join?’

Davina was quick to comment, writing: ‘Yayyyyyy!!! ‘Fantastic result!!!!’

Zoe Ball added: ‘Oh darling. Thank God you were checked and a fabulous team took care of you. I hope you can get some rest and heal well. mega love for you ‍’

Kate Lawler wrote: “I’m so glad you’re okay.” I love surprises for loved ones. How beautiful xx ‘

Paddy McGuinness wrote: “Again mate.”

SUBDURAL HEMATOMA: HOW A BLEEDING IN THE BRAIN CAN BE FATAL

A subdural hematoma is a collection of clotted blood that puts pressure on the brain.

It usually occurs as a result of a head injury and is a serious condition that often requires emergency treatment.

There are three types of subdural hematoma:

A CT scan may show a subdural hematoma, and surgery may be necessary to remove the hematoma. Many people with a small subdural hematoma can recover quickly and completely.

However, in some cases it can cause damage to brain tissues and in the worst cases, a large hematoma on the brain can lead to death.
