Indian rescue services have been working tirelessly to rescue a toddler who has been trapped underground for five days after falling into a well.

Three-year-old Chetna sank 150 feet into a 700-foot well on Monday in the Indian village of Kotputli in Rajasthan.

The young woman, who has spent more than 90 hours without food or water, is said to be very weak and unable to move.

Meanwhile, emergency workers have been racing against time to get Chetna out of the well while monitoring her via video camera and supplying her with oxygen through a pipe.

For three days, manual excavations have been carried out to try to free the young woman, according to local press reports.

Rescuers have tried different techniques to reach the girl, but so far none have been effective.

District collector Kalpana Aggarwal said rescue teams have been digging wells and then digging horizontally from below to reach the trapped girl.

A pile driving machine was brought to the site on Wednesday to excavate the tunnel and a 100-tonne crane was sent today to speed up the process.

But continuous rains have hampered rescue operations, reports the Indian media Free Press Journal, as they have prevented rescue teams from descending into the well to reach Chetna.

Waterproof tents are being set up to safely cover the well, while a first aid team is stationed next to the well to provide medical care when necessary.

There is already a plan to shift Chetna to the nearby Kotputli hospital as soon as she is rescued.

Meanwhile, the young woman’s family is said to be anxiously awaiting news of her rescue, but her distraught mother’s health has deteriorated as a result of the current situation.
