Queensland yoga guru Lauren Verona died from amniotic fluid embolism in Sunshine Coast home birth

The heartbroken husband of the mother of three Queenland yoga instructors who tragically died while giving birth at home has revealed the first details of the rare mysterious condition that killed her.

Lauren Verona, 42, is said to have died of an amniotic fluid embolism after giving birth to her third daughter, Lucinda, at their home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Now shattered husband Ryan Gaylard has paid tribute to his partner and his newborn baby, who will be a fond memory of his wife.

“I want you all to know that Lauren has been in touch with our beautiful baby,” he said. ‘Lucinda means light, and she is certainly a light in these dark times.

“There is pain from our unfathomable loss, but our hearts fill with our little bundle of joy that Lauren has blessed us with.”

The home birth initially appeared to be going according to plan, Gaylard said.

“It was Lauren’s perfect natural birth,” Mr Gaylard said.

“Using everything we learned from our hypno birth course, Lauren balanced herself perfectly and gently breathed her baby into this world.”

But shortly after Mrs. Verona held Lucinda for the first time, she suddenly became seriously ill

The coroner and medical experts are still investigating the cause of Ms Verona’s death, but Mr Gaylard said he had been told by hospital staff that his wife had contracted the amniotic fluid embolism.

The condition occurs when amniotic fluid or other fetal material enters the mother’s bloodstream and can prevent blood from clotting.

Ms. Verona was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where medics tried unsuccessfully to rescue her.

“There’s little research on this condition because it’s infrequent…it’s as rare as chicken teeth,” Mr Gaylard said.

“The coroner is still doing research down to the microscopic level in the hopes that it can help understand this condition and maybe save another family from what we’ve been through in the past 22 days and for the rest of our lives.

“But in true Lauren style, she was always helping people.”

Gaylard said his daughters described the day their youngest sister was born as the “happiest and saddest” day of their lives.

“These three girls are my absolute priority for the rest of my life.”

Mr Gaylard spoke about the hypno birthing course the couple had taken before baby Lucinda was born.

“Lauren believed in and was very intuitive about the possibilities of her own body and was always curious about the best ways to move forward for herself,” he said.

‘She inspired all women to empower themselves with this belief. What would Laurens say? “My mind, my body, my choice.”

The family will hold a private funeral, followed by a public funeral later in the month at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Ms. Verona led Zenko Yoga in Noosaville, on the Sunshine Coast, describing the studio’s mission to “inspire people to seek inner change and transformation.”

Her death came just months after Mrs. Verona married the love of her life Ryan in an intimate wedding in February.

Mrs. Verona had only been married for four months before she died in childbirth.

Photos showed the pregnant mother of three dressed in a loose-fitting white dress as she tied the knot with her partner near a beach.

Her distraught employees shared their devastation over her sudden death in a heartbreaking post on the company’s Facebook page.

“This unfathomable loss is deeply felt by all of us who are part of her teaching team, by her family, her friends and we know it will be by everyone who has come to know her,” it read.

Anyone who went to her workshops, watched her videos, shared space with her during retreats, trained with her, practiced with her or just met her knows how powerful her presence was, how her energy radiated with light and wisdom to everyone and everything she hit!

“Lauren has CHANGED more lives than anyone can comprehend and it is our greatest loss that we cannot continue to share her joy, her spirit and her wisdom with this world.”

They expressed their deepest condolences to Mrs Verona’s partner and their two older daughters Allira and Evie.

“In this time of darkness, we still have a shining light not only in Lucinda, but all of her loved ones she leaves behind, especially Ryan and her daughters,” the message read.

“May she, and all of us, continue to share her light, her wisdom, her laughter, her tears for the lives to come.”

Ms Verona had previously spoken out about the ‘indescribable pelvic girdle pain’ she experienced when she was 35 weeks pregnant.

“Pelvic instability, anemia and gestational diabetes are keeping me on the bench but otherwise wonderful and looking forward to giving birth to this angel as soon as possible,” she said at 30 weeks before she was given everything clear for a natural birth.

Remarkably, at my 36 week ultrasound, my cervix is now free of what used to be a low lying placenta at 0.5 cm distance.

Even the sonographer seemed shocked and called her senior in to confirm. The midwife who tried to convince me of a caesarean section told me that I was free to go home and give birth naturally.’

Just five days ago, she said the “countless pregnancy complications” she had experienced had been “extremely challenging.”

“But I hear my own children say ‘divine timing’ when someone asks when the baby will be out. I love that they get it,” she said.

“So here we are 41 weeks pregnant, trusting the higher plane.”

Grieving friends and family shared their heartbreak as they paid their respects.

“I am devastated that in this physical realm I have lost an amazing woman who taught me to love and be fearless,” one wrote.

Another added: ‘It was my greatest honor and privilege to meet, train, know and support her in her passion, the physicality and energy of Zenko Yoga.

“So many memories that will be etched in my mind forever… My heart aches for her divine two young daughters, her beloved husband and newborn baby girl.”

The yoga studio was briefly open to members on Friday morning to pay their respects, but classes are temporarily cancelled.
