Five officers, including an acting sergeant, constables and senior constables initially responded to the call.

Chris Lawson, Acting Superintendent of Townsville District, said: ‘Police fired their service firearms at the man and hit the man, and as soon as he was hit first aid was administered and unfortunately a short time later after the arrival of QAS, he was declared dead’.

“This entire incident has been captured on body-worn CCTV footage so that the footage will be available to the coroner and the Ethical Standards Command as they conduct their investigation,” said Mr Lawson.

A Queensland Police spokesman said an investigation is underway.
