Queen Mary of Denmark wowed in an oak green coat today as she joined her husband King Frederick to welcome Egypt’s president in Copenhagen.

Mary, 52, and Frederik, 56, who will spend their first Christmas together as monarchs, welcomed Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at Amalienborg Palace on the first day of the Egyptian president’s two-day state visit.

Mary looked festive in an elegant green coat that cinched at the waist and fell just below the knee.

She completed the sophisticated ensemble with gray heels, a matching fascinator, and a clutch.

Frederik looked typically dapper in a black suit which he paired with a pale blue shirt and striped tie for the first time that a non-European leader was received by King Frederik and Queen Mary.

During the state visit, the King and Queen will receive the President of Egypt and a state banquet will be held tonight at Christiansborg Palace.

President Abdel will be accompanied during the visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of Egypt, as well as an Egyptian business delegation.

It comes after the royal couple revealed they will not be accompanied by Prince Joachim and Princess Mary this Christmas.

In a post on Instagram, the Danish royal house said the king and queen would celebrate Christmas at Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus with Frederick’s mother, Queen Margaret, who abdicated the throne in January.

They will also be joined by their children, Crown Prince Christian, 19, Princess Elizabeth, 17, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.

The Aarhus residence has been the setting for the Royal Family’s Christmases since the King was a child, with a few exceptions.

This year, however, they will not be accompanied by their younger brother Prince Joachim, 55, and his wife Princess Mary, 48, as they will spend Christmas with Mary’s family.

Prince Joachim and his wife previously had a strained relationship with the rest of the royals after Queen Margaret stripped her children of their royal titles in 2022 and now works as a defense industry attaché and lives in Washington DC.

He previously said his children were “hurt” by the decision, but has since said they have “moved on”, appearing on good terms with the family at abdication events earlier this year.

Since stepping down as monarch after 52 years on the throne, Queen Margaret has maintained her appearances at royal events but was forced to take time off sick after suffering a fall in September.

King Frederick, 56, will stay at the Castle from December 23 to 26, joining his mother, who will reside there from December 20 to 30.

In the announcement, translated from Danish, the royal house wrote: “This year, Aarhus is once again the setting for the Royal Family Christmas.

“Their Majesties the King and Queen, together with Their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince, Princess Elizabeth, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, will celebrate Christmas at Marselisborg Castle together with Her Majesty Queen Margaret.”

They did not give a reason for Prince Joachim and Princess Mary’s absence this year, writing: “Their Royal Highnesses Prince Joachim and Princess Mary celebrate Christmas together with their children in the Princess’s family.”

During the King’s stay, a changing of the guard will take place every day at noon. King Frederick will also give his first New Year’s Eve speech as monarch, which will be delivered from Frederick VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg.

It will be another show of solidarity for Queen Mary, 52, and King Frederick, who have been plagued by rumors of marital strife over the past year.

In November 2023, photographs of Crown Prince Federico enjoying an evening with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casnova caused a stir in Denmark.

The Palace called it a “private visit” but otherwise declined to discuss the nature of the now infamous incident. Meanwhile, his wife, Mary, was more than 3,000 miles away on official royal business in New York.

In the photos, the royal and the billionaire Duchess of Alba’s former daughter-in-law are seen walking through Madrid before heading to her apartment building, changing clothes and heading out again for the night.

The publication of the photos caused Genoveva, 47, to issue a statement denying any type of romantic relationship between her and royalty and criticizing the “malicious” rumors.

Since then, the pair have made a number of public displays together, but have also made numerous separate appearances, and were also spotted coldly glancing at each other during a ski holiday in March.

In January, Queen Margaret became the first Danish monarch to abdicate in more than 500 years; Experts say the royal made the decision to “save her son’s marriage.”

She said at the time: ‘In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well thanks to the qualified health personnel who treated me. Of course, the operation also raised thoughts about the future: whether the time had come to hand over responsibility to the next generation.

‘I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.
