Queen Mary and King Frederik watched the Changing of the Guard from their summer residence Graasten Castle today, but it was their adorable dog who stole the show.

The royal couple, who looked cheerful after months of frosty appearances, opted for casual summer clothes instead of their usual lavish attire and were enjoying the sunny weather in the southern region of the country.

But as they watched the ceremony from the doorway of their home, which took place in the castle courtyard, all eyes were on their furry friend.

Mary’s border collie Grace attracted attention as she turned around and posed for the cameras.

The royal family acquired Grace in 2017 after the death of their other dog, Ziggy, and said the puppies were from the same family.

Ziggy was given to Mary and Frederik as a wedding present when they got married in 2004.

At the time, they wrote on Instagram: “Ziggy was a loyal and loving dog, who unfortunately suffered from chronic kidney failure and osteoarthritis. Despite this, he had a high quality of life until the end.”

Mary, 52, channelled summer and opted for a simple yet sophisticated look by sporting a cashmere cardigan from Yoox, which retails for £176.

She paired the colorful piece in muted blue and yellow tones with a flowing white maxi skirt and a ribbed shirt.

As an accessory, Mary opted for a simple look, wearing sunglasses, brown and cream checkered sandals and a gold necklace with an M charm.

She wore her shiny brown hair loose, gathered with a hairdryer, and opted for natural makeup.

King Frederik, 56, also kept his ensemble light and fresh, sporting a blue and white patterned shirt, tan chinos and a pair of navy loafers.

The couple stood attentively watching the formal ceremony in which soldiers serving in important institutions, such as palaces, are relieved by a new group of soldiers.

According to the royal family’s website, the “Friday Parade” takes place in Graasten on Fridays, with the participation of the Royal Guard band as the changing of the guard takes place in the palace courtyard.

Earlier this week, the Queen received several bouquets of flowers from well-wishers. The royal couple were also welcomed by Mayor Erik Lauritzen.

The summer break comes after a turbulent year for the Danish monarchy that included rumours that King Frederik had had an affair (which were strenuously denied) and Queen Margrethe’s shock abdication on New Year’s Day.
