Putin will be no-show at G20 in Bali, confirms Indonesian official

The heightened conflict from Russian aggression has ruled that out, but after playing peacemaker with visits to Kiev and Moscow in July, Widodo longs for Indonesia’s moment in the sun not to turn into a war of words.

“All parties must exercise restraint. Avoid confrontations and respect all agreements made,” he said The Jakarta Post.

He said he expected the summit to be attended by 17 heads of state or government, a “very good” outcome in the turbulent global landscape.

Whether the leaders present can reach a consensus on a joint communiqué, as is the custom at such multilateral events, is highly questionable.

There have been strikes this year by Western officials at ministerial-level meetings of the G20 and other events this year, including by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who stepped down from the East Asian foreign ministers’ meeting in Cambodia in August. in protest against the “attempt by Russian counterpart Lavrov to murder innocent Ukrainians”.

“This is a complicated matter because all members have to agree,” said Wahid Supriyadi, who was Indonesia’s ambassador to Russia between 2016 and 2020.

“But under the current circumstances, we can understand. Perhaps the best thing they can do is make a statement from a chairman. If a joint communiqué is not reached, we cannot say that it is Indonesia’s failure, because it concerns great powers.”

The meeting also provides an opportunity for a series of bilateral meetings.

Albanian has said he is open to a meeting with Xi as Australia seeks to improve relations with Beijing and a possible first face-to-face meeting between Biden and the Chinese president is also on the agenda.

Albanian will speak in Bali on Monday at the Business 20 investor meeting.

Leaders are also scheduled to attend a gala dinner and lunches during the summit in Bali’s southern Nusa Dua area, which has been closed for the duration with more than 18,000 troops and police officers on duty.
