A close ally of Vladimir Putin has predicted the United States will collapse into an “imminent new civil war” amid the chaos of the presidential election in his latest social media rant.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council and former Russian prime minister, believes the United States will maintain its sanctions against the Kremlin “forever” or until a civil war leaves the country in ruins.
Medvedev, in a Telegram message on Saturday, offered his thoughts on the US presidential election, calling Democratic candidate Kamala Harris “inexperienced” and “just plain stupid” and her Republican rival Donald Trump an “eccentric narcissist” and a “pragmatist.”
He argued that although Trump “understands that sanctions hurt the dollar’s dominance in the world” and has “threatened to lift them,” he will not actually do so because it is an “insufficient reason to organize a revolution” in an anti-Russian United States.
He also said Harris, whom Putin has endorsed, will continue to deliver “beautiful, meaningless speeches” during which she will “read from a teleprompter while laughing infectiously.”
Russian leaders, apparently outraged by sanctions imposed on the nation following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have constantly repeated the story of another civil war. Medvedev had even previously claimed that there were parallels between the current political climate and that of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency.

The United States has been gradually increasing its sanctions against Russia. In December, President Joe Biden issued an executive order that would allow the United States to directly sanction foreign banks that facilitate transactions for Russia.
But Biden dropped out of the White House race in July and endorsed his vice president for the job. Last week, Putin also endorsed Harris.
Medvedev, who has been in the headlines throughout the Ukraine war for his outlandish comments on social media, has now weighed in on the upcoming election and the impact he thinks it could have on Russian sanctions.
“Out of spite for the current administration, Donald Trump has threatened to lift sanctions against Russia. But will he actually do so if elected? No, of course not,” he wrote in a Telegram post on Saturday.
‘For all his apparent outsider bravado, Trump is ultimately a member of the establishment. Yes, he is an eccentric narcissist, but he is also a pragmatist.’
Medvedev said that as a “businessman,” Trump is aware of the financial impact sanctions have on the US dollar, but argues that he will still not go after DC.
Medvedev, who has been in the news throughout the Ukraine war for his outlandish social media rants, has now weighed in on the upcoming elections and the impact he thinks they could have on Russian sanctions.
“Trump understands that sanctions hurt the dollar’s dominance in the world. However, that is not a sufficient reason to organize a revolution in the United States and go against the anti-Russian line of the infamous Deep State, which is much stronger than any Trump,” he said, before pointing to Harris.

Medvedev, suggesting once again that the United States was on the brink of destruction, concluded: “There were sanctions against the USSR throughout the 20th century, and they have returned on an unprecedented scale in the 21st century.
“So the sanctions are forever. Or rather, until the United States collapses in an imminent new civil war. After all, Hollywood makes movies about this topic for a reason.”
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement to Newsweek Magazineresponded to Medvedev’s comments, saying that “Putin has endorsed Kamala Harris because he knows that Russia will easily beat her.”

Medvedev (pictured, September 9, 2024) had previously warned that the US was on the brink of civil war, having done so last July and in 2022. However, the State Department previously dismissed his comments as “standard Kremlin nonsense.”
Medvedev warned of a “premonition of civil war” on July 4 this year, claiming there were parallels between the American Civil War and the United States today.
He also compared the civil war to the current conflict in Ukraine.
Medvedev’s predictions appear to be unfounded: Putin’s ally had predicted in 2022 that an internal war would break out in the United States in 2023.
The US State Department has also previously dismissed Medvedev’s remarks. A spokesperson told Newsweek: “We already know not to take Medvedev seriously. This is typical Kremlin nonsense.”
