Dramatic footage has captured the rescue effort by emergency services after a woman was hit by a train in Sydney.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was hit by a car at Punchbowl railway station in the south-west of the city on Tuesday afternoon, shortly before rush hour.

She was immediately put in an ambulance before being taken to St George’s Hospital, but tragically died on Wednesday morning.

He had gone down to the track to retrieve something he had dropped (possibly a mobile phone) and was unable to get back up to the platform.

The video shows emergency services called to the station, including Fire and Rescue NSW crews, working to free the woman from beneath the train.

A team of paramedics then performed CPR on the woman as she was carefully carried on a stretcher from the platform, through the train station to a waiting ambulance.

A police patrol car then arrived, sirens blaring, to deliver blood to the paramedics working in the back of the ambulance.

The incident caused widespread closures and delays on rail routes in Sydney on Tuesday.

Crowds gathered at Central Station awaiting trains travelling slowly along the T3 Bankstown line.

“Service Disruption: Please allow additional travel time due to an incident requiring emergency services at Punchbowl earlier,” the warning signs read.

Passengers travelling to Punchbowl had to take all-stop services to Revesby, and several services were cancelled.

Police are investigating the incident.

Officers have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene and reviewed CCTV cameras as part of their investigations.

The train driver tested negative for alcohol.
