Protesters clash with the police for a second day at the location of the planned detention camp for migrants

The riot police on the Greek island of Lesbos today fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters against the establishment of a new detention center for migrants when the last outburst of unrest started a second day.

The Athens government angered the residents of five islands in the Aegean Sea – all along an important route to Europe used by thousands of migrants – by announcing two weeks ago that it would speed up the construction of secure detention centers to open, heavy replace overcrowded camps.

Local residents – who are concerned that such an arrangement could become permanent – tried to approach a location intended for a new migrant center and clashed with the police on a road winding through a forest.

Protesters launched gas bombs that burst into flames, threw stones and kicked back gas bottles as the collision escalated.

“More than 1,000 people who protested against the new facility … threw stones at the police and hit their helmets. The police were forced to use chemicals, “said a police spokesman with a euphemism for tear gas.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people gathered in the town of Mytilini on Lesbos as part of a general strike to protest the government’s plans to create the new closed migrant facility.

On Tuesday, the locals used vehicles and garbage trucks to block police reinforcements and heavy machinery in a harbor.

Riot police marched in formation and used tear gas and flash grenades on residents. At least three people on Chios, including the mayor and a priest, were rushed to the hospital last night after breathing difficulties due to the toxic fumes.

The government of Athens says the closed centers will offer more safety and security to asylum seekers and locals alike, and plans to build them on the islands of Samos, Kos, Leros and Chios next to Lesbos.

The locals say the islands bear a disproportionate burden of a migration crisis that started in 2015 when more than one million people fled the violence in the Middle East and beyond, reached Greece and then traveled on to the richer Middle and North Europe, their favorite destinations.

Borders that have since been imposed along the migratory route through the Balkans and Central Europe north of Greece have left many thousands of later arrivals on Greek islands near Turkey.
