Joe Biden awkwardly mispronounced Anthony Albanese’s name during a meeting between the two leaders on the historic AUKUS deal.

The US President was joined by Australian Prime Minister and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in San Diego on Tuesday to unveil details of the $368 billion plan for Australia to acquire eight jet-powered submarines. nuclear.

Mr. Biden said it was an honor to welcome both leaders to the US, but referred to Mr. Albanese as “Mr. Alba-neez” instead of “Alban-nese.”

The mispronunciation of the US President was quickly followed by Mr. Sunak addressing Mr. Albanese as “Antony”, instead of “Anthony”.

The slip-ups caught the attention of Today Show host Karl Stefanovic, who jokingly referred to Mr. Albanese as ‘Antony’ at the conclusion of his segment on the meeting.

‘Very significant announcement there really geared towards Australia, right? I’m not quite getting the name of the prime minister right, but who’s counting,” she said.

“Prime Minister Anthony Albanese or ‘Antony’, US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announce the biggest defense pact in decades.”

Albanese announced Tuesday that Australia would spend up to $368 billion on the deal and command a fleet of eight nuclear-powered submarines over the next three decades under an accelerated plan to deter Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific.

Canberra will procure three Virginia-class nuclear submarines from the US as an interim measure starting in about 2033 before a new SSN-AUKUS-class hybrid vessel arrives in Australian waters a decade later as part of the trilateral alliance with the UK and the US

The cost to taxpayers will be between $268 and $368 billion over the next three decades.

The US President (centre) was joined by Australian Prime Minister (left) and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (right) in San Diego on Tuesday to unveil details of the $368 billion plan to for Australia to acquire eight nuclear-powered submarines.

Starting this year, Australian military and civilian personnel will be integrated into the US Navy and Royal Navy, and UK and US submarine industrial bases to train Australian personnel.

A new submarine base to house the nuclear-powered AUKUS fleet will be created along the east coast with Port Kembla, in New South Wales, as the new location.

The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that his country would strengthen its military in response to the AUKUS plan.

He addressed the National People’s Congress on Monday saying the army would be strengthened to create a “great steel wall,” labeling security “the foundation of development” and accusing Western colonial powers of “national humiliation.”

“We should fully promote the modernization of the national defense and armed forces, and turn the people’s armed forces into a great steel wall that effectively safeguards national sovereignty, security and development interests,” he said.

Albanese called the landmark AUKUS agreement a new chapter in strengthening the relationship with the US and the UK.

“A friendship built on our shared values, our commitment to democracy and our common vision of a peaceful and prosperous future,” he said.

“This is only the first time in 65 years and only the second time in history that the United States has shared its nuclear propulsion technology. And we thank you.

‘This is a genuine trilateral company. The three nations are ready to contribute and the three nations are ready to benefit.’

AUKUS plan timeline

Australia will command a fleet of eight nuclear-powered submarines within the next three decades under a fast-track plan that will cost up to $368 billion.

Starting this year, Australian military and civilian personnel will be integrated into the US Navy and Royal Navy, and UK and US submarine industrial bases to train Australian personnel.

The US plans to increase nuclear-powered submarine visits to Australian ports this year, with Australian sailors joining US crews.

From 2026 the UK will increase visits to Australia.

As early as 2027, up to four US Virginia-class submarines and one UK nuclear vessel will begin their nuclear-powered submarine rotations to Australia, based in Perth.

In the early 2030s, around 2033, pending US Congressional approval, the US will sell at least three Virginia-class submarines, with the potential to buy two more.

In the late 2030s, the UK will deliver its first SSN-AUKUS.

In the early 2030s, Australia will deliver its first SSN-AUKUS built at the South Australian Submarine Construction Yard in Osborne.

The project is expected to cost between $268 billion and $368 billion by 2054/55.

On future estimates, the cost will reach around $9 billion. At least $3 billion of that will go to the US to ensure they can produce enough submarines for Australia.

The remaining $6 billion will be spent in Australia, predominantly South Australia and Western Australia, to start ramping up its own shipbuilding and infrastructure maintenance.

In the medium term (the 10 years until 2032-33), the program will cost between 50,000 and 58,000 million dollars.

In the longer term, up to the 2050s, it will cost on average around 0.15% of GDP per year.
