An American pro-gun activist has clashed with an Australian on the streets of New York over his support for basic gun control laws.

Caitlin Bennett, 27, has been interviewing people for her right-wing site Liberty Hangout in the clip shared on TikTok this week that has reached more than 1 million views.

Bennett made headlines in 2018 when she showed up at Kent State University in Ohio the day after her graduation with an Armalite AR-10 semi-automatic rifle strapped to her back.

The 22-year-old posed for pictures holding a graduation hat emblazoned with the words “Come Get It” which she said was a protest against the university’s policy prohibiting students and staff from carrying “lethal weapons” on campus.

In the clip, which was filmed in 2019 but has gone viral again, Bennett asks the Australian man, who appears to be with a group about to attend a show in Times Square, if “you guys have the right to bear arms there?” .

The man replied, “Yeah…but under license so they don’t get into the hands of nut cases and all the high school massacres happening.”

‘So you have gun control? This is terrible, I don’t want to live there, Bennett said to the man.

Bennett appears regularly on social media brandishing various weapons and announcing her support for right-wing politicians such as Donald Trump and Florida Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis.

Bennett asks the man if he considers gun control a good thing.

‘definitely!’ the man replies.

Bennett argued, “Why should my right to self-defense be controlled? Why do I need a license to protect myself from nuts?”

The man replies, “Because it keeps guns from falling into the wrong hands. There is a rigorous vetting process.”

Bennett then argued that she had a right to self-defence and property protection and asked whether the government should “put a hand in self-defense”.

Are you happy that innocent people are killed because the evidence shows that this is what happens? The man replied: The evidence is in the dessert.

Gun laws changed in Australia in 1996, led by former Prime Minister John Howard in the aftermath of the Port Arthur massacre, and since then, in stark contrast to the United States, the country has seen almost no mass shootings.

Then the guy tells Bennett he has a concert to go to and he goes out with his group.

“Never become citizens, folks,” Bennett yells.

Commentators on the clip seemed to take the Australian man’s side in the debate.

“Gun laws stop the need for so much self-defense…are they that naive?” someone said.

“He mopped the floor with her and she still thinks she’s right.” said another.

“Typical, assuming everyone wants to be American.” A third added.
