- It seems their loyalties may be divided
She may have been born and raised in Australia, but Princess Mary Frederik will be flying the flag of Denmark tonight and rooting for the Matildas to lose in their crucial Women’s World Cup clash.
Princess Mary of Denmark, born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, is the wife of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.
Born in Hobart, Tasmania, she met Crown Prince Frederik during the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
With the Matildas due to face Denmark in a Women’s World Cup round of 16 clash on Monday night, the royal couple had to make tough decisions.
Princess Mary’s Australian roots weren’t enough to cheer her up for the Matildas, and the couple announced on their joint Instagram account that they would both be heading to Denmark.
Princess Mary of Denmark could come from Australia

Princess Mark of Denmark posted an image with her dog Grace and Danish face paint, but also included an image of Grace with a football in Australian colours.

Denmark and Australia met in the Men’s World Cup, and Matildas fans hope the team will follow in the footsteps of the Socceroos, who emerged victorious in Qatar.
“We will be cheering from ‘Top Over’ all the way to ‘Down Under’ when the match against Australia in the soccer World Cup kicks off,” the post, which was written in Danish, read.
Come on, Denmark. Signed, The Crown Prince Couple.
The post included an image of Princess Mary with the family dog Grace, both with the flags of Denmark painted on their faces.
However, it also included another image of Grace with a football colored in Australia’s iconic green and gold.
“It’s hard to choose who you’re rooting for… but no matter what it is, it’s happy no matter who wins,” one follower commented.
“I wonder if Mary is just a little attached to the homeland,” replied another with love and laugh emojis.
“I wonder if Crown Princess Mary also hopes that her homeland of Australia will do well?” asked another.

Princess Mary returned to Australia this year for a tour that also included visits to Vanuatu and Fiji.
Earlier, Princess Mary refused to declare her allegiance when Denmark faced Australia at the Men’s World Cup in Qatar.
While Prince Frederik and his children were pictured kicking a soccer ball in Denmark jerseys, Princess Mary was conspicuously absent.
He had previously said that he would support the Danes, but he did not put on a public show during the World Cup.
Now it seems their loyalties may be divided after all.
