A third installment of Princess Diaries is definitely coming to the big screen, as it was revealed that Disney has hired Adele Lim to direct the next film in the popular franchise, but there is still no confirmation on whether Anne Hathaway will return or not.
Hathaway, along with Julie Andrews, starred in 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and both films were directed by the late Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.
Lim, best known for writing Crazy Rich Asians, said Variety in a statement: ‘As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I am beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third version of this beloved franchise to life.
“We look forward to celebrating its founding principles: girl power, joy and mentorship with audiences around the world,” she added.
The script is written by Flora Greeson, while the film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise starring Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, who is shocked when she discovers she is the heir apparent to the Genovian throne.

Princess Diaries 3 has been in development since 2022 and just last year, Hathaway shared her excitement about the progress of the long-awaited film.
During an interview with V Magazine, the 41-year-old Hollywood star said: “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
However, it appears that The Devil Wears Prada actress has yet to officially sign on to the project, but that didn’t stop fans from hoping and praying.

Another said: ‘I’ve wanted another Princess Diaries movie my whole life, no one will ruin this moment for me,’ and a third person commented: ‘WE’RE GETTING PRINCESS DIARIES 3. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT I’M SO HAPPY.’

Someone else predicted the story, asking, “I wonder if Mia will have a child of her own in Princess Diaries 3?”
And a different fan commented: ‘Ok, and now they’re announcing that Princess Diaries 3 is coming. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING? RN, not that I’m complaining, but my goodness, it’s okay, let me catch my breath.’
The exciting news comes after Andrews, 89, suggested the third Princess Diaries film may have been shelved.
The first Princess Diaries film also stars Julie Andrews as Clarisse Renaldi and was released in 2001.

During an appearance on Today in March, the Sound of Music star offered his perspective on the third film, saying, “There was a dialogue about it.
