The late Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer has shared a solemn post visiting his sister’s grave over the Christmas period.

The 9th Earl Spencer, 60, took to social media on December 24 to share a “quiet moment” at his younger sister’s resting place at Althorp House, the house where the two grew up together.

Charles shared a photo of a large black bench placed beneath his monument and wrote that it was the perfect place to remember his younger sister, who died in 1997 at the age of 36.

“My favorite bench – a nice place to sit on Christmas Eve for a quiet moment,” he captioned the photo, revealing the black bench beneath a portrait of Diana.

Adding a second image to his Instagram Story, Charles shared a thoughtful photo of Oval Lake, showing the shadows of leafless trees falling over the water.

Princess Diana is buried on an island in the middle of the lake, accessible only by close friends and family by boat.

She had initially been planned to be buried in a vault at Great Brington, where generations of Spencers have historically been buried.

But fearing for his privacy even after death, Charles decided to change his final resting place to Althorp House, where the couple spent many happy years growing up.

In his book Althorp: The Story of an English House, he explained that the remote location for his burial was “entirely intentional”.

He said the lake is “a buffer against the interventions of the crazy and the sweet tooth, and the thick mud presents a new line of defense.”

The Northamptonshire estate, which has more than 13,000 acres, is open for tourists to visit during the summer months, but then closes during the winter.

Charles previously revealed that he visits his sister’s grave “practically every day” and that she is still “very much” alive in his memory.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier this year, the author said he visits Diana almost daily, even though it has been 27 years since her death.

He acknowledged that almost every viewer would probably have their own set of traumas to struggle with: “And, like everyone else, you get used to it and it never goes away.”
