Prince William sent a message to budding young environmentalists by launching a new Earthshot competition for children – and in a change of style, he was clean-shaven.
The Prince of Wales, 42, teamed up with the BBC’s long-running children’s programme Blue Peter to announce the competition. aimed at inspiring young people to focus on solutions for climate change.
However, after dazzling royal fans with his designer beard on his first royal engagement after the summer, when he went to see an exhibition about homelessness, the royal father of three was not sporting even a hint of facial hair.
Fans have gone wild for William’s neat, short beard in recent weeks, after he sent the internet into a frenzy with his appearance in a clip congratulating Team Great Britain on their triumphs at the Olympics.
While standing alongside the Princess of Wales in a clip filmed at their home, William showed off a “summer holiday” beard that left many royal fans swooning.
After wowing the world with his gorgeous beard yesterday, Prince William appeared completely shaven in a video for Blue Peter.
The Prince of Wales was pictured yesterday showing off his new, unkempt facial hair, much to the delight of his fans.
It seems William has tried out a few different looks over the past few months, alternating between a clean shaven look and a designer stubble in various appearances.
Although it is unclear when the Blue Peter clip was filmed, it is likely that William was involved in promoting the competition the day before yesterday.
As he spoke to budding environmentalists, the father of three looked classic in a blue ensemble featuring a navy blazer and a pale open shirt.
In the new clip, which was posted on the BBC’s social media channels, William revealed details of the new children’s competition, which he hopes will inspire the next generation to come up with sustainable solutions for the planet.
He said: “I started the Earthshot Prize to find solutions to the world’s biggest environmental challenges and we want to find the next generation of young inventors who can make a difference.”
Entries for Earthshot will open at 5pm today for UK residents aged 5-15 and close at the same time on 28 October.
The contest invites children to use their imagination to come up with inventions based on solutions to help the planet, including prizes in five different categories.
There are prizes to be among the first in the following categories: Fix our climate, Protect and restore nature, Clean our air, Revive our oceans and build a waste-free world.
The winners of the competition will receive a prize and the chance to attend a VIP filming experience with Blue Peter.
Lucky winners will also receive a copy of Earthshot’s book ‘A Handbook for Dreamers and Thinkers – Solutions to Fix Our Planet’, as well as an exclusive orange contest winner’s badge.
To recognize their achievements, Earthshot winners will gain the opportunity to be recognized by the prince himself.
William launched the competition for adults four years ago with the aim of finding solutions to the climate crisis.
At the Earthshot Prize ceremony last year, William said we were in the “critical decade” to try to put the planet on a “healthier” path to tackle the climate crisis.
Since 2021, the prize scheme has awarded £15 million in prizes and secured £50 million in additional support for 45 winners and runners-up.

Yesterday, the prince dedicated his first post-summer engagement to one of his most cherished causes by visiting the Homelessness: Reframed exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London.
The heir to the throne also met with his friend Dave Martin, A Big Issue seller who has taken under his wing.
Dave first became homeless in 2011 after moving to London, but after an extraordinary journey he now exchanges Christmas cards with the future King, and the pair have become close friends.
The two demonstrated the closeness of their bond when the prince shook Dave’s hand and gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder.
“Dave, it’s great to see you again. How have you been?” William said enthusiastically.
“Do I recognize this? Is that you?” she said, speaking of a piece she contributed with abstract geometric shapes representing aspects of her life, including paths, a roof over her head and windows to see the light.
Mr Martin said proudly of William: “He recognised my work straight away.”
Then William said to her, “If I don’t see you soon, take care of yourself.”

Prince William met Dave Martin, a Big Issue seller with whom he has become close friends.
In June 2022, William quietly joined Dave in helping sell The Big Issue on the streets of central London.
And this July, he shared that he is more convinced than ever that homelessness can be eradicated forever.
Homelessness: Reframed is designed to bring to life the breadth and complexities of homelessness and aims to help audiences engage with and better understand the stories of those who have experienced the issue.
This is a central aim of the Homewards programme, which was launched by The Prince and The Prince and Princess of Wales’ Royal Foundation in June 2023, to change the narrative and challenge negative perceptions and stereotypes around homelessness, as well as to eradicate homelessness in six key areas of the UK.
William spoke about his passion for changing public perception about homelessness and He was so engrossed in work that his half-hour visit to Homelessness: Reframed stretched into almost an hour.
Told that visitor numbers had far exceeded expectations (instead of the expected 5,000, more than 25,000 passed through the doors of the six-week event in just 23 days), he said: “I’m really, really, really pleased.”
Fans were alarmed when William appeared to have shaved off his beard to return to work, after the clean-shaven Prince was spotted attending a service at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral.
But William is clearly a fan of the new look, and grew it out once again for his return to engagements on Thursday after spending the summer with Princess Kate and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
In a recent Blue Peter promotional video for the prestigious Earshot competition, William sported his usual slicked-back look, although the video was likely filmed before the prince decided to grow his famous stubble again.
