Prince William appears to be inspired by his younger brother, Prince Harry, in his efforts to modernize the monarchy. The Prince of Wales is reportedly adopt a more empathetic and open approach to royal duties, reflecting some of the values Harry has long championed.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl discussed this development during a conversation with The Royal Editor of the Sun, Matt Wilkinson. He highlighted how Harry’s influence may be playing a role in reshaping the monarchy’s traditional practices. “One person who is probably sitting there thinking, ‘this is what I’ve been saying all along’ is the Duke of Sussex,” Nicholl said.
He explained further: “Let’s be more open, let’s show more empathy, let’s do things a little differently. “One of the reasons Harry felt he needed to leave was because he didn’t feel like he could bend the institution the way he wanted to do things.” Nicholl suggested that Harry’s departure and his push for a more humanized approach to royal life may have stimulated reflection within the monarchy. “I think we’ve seen the royals take a leaf from their book.” she said.
However, Nicholl was quick to point out that William’s modernization efforts will remain rooted in traditional British values. “William will never make it to California,” she emphasized, referencing Harry and Meghan Markle’s relaxed and emotionally open style since they moved to the U.S. “They’re not going to let that happen, that’s not them.” Nicholl added.
He made a distinction between the changes the monarchy is taking and the more informal approach associated with Harry and Meghan. “It’s one thing to open up; “It’s one thing to see the King give someone a big hug instead of just shaking their hand.” she explained.
Prince William’s efforts reflect a balancing act between maintaining royal traditions and adapting to the expectations of a modern audience. As the monarchy seeks to connect with younger generations, these subtle changes suggest a willingness to evolve without losing its core identity.
While the brothers remain estranged, Harry’s influence on the institution he left behind seems undeniable. His drive for empathy and openness may have sparked a broader shift in the way the Royal Family approaches its public duties, with William leading the charge to unite tradition with modernity. As a future king, Prince William’s actions hint at a monarchy that is slowly adapting to changing times, combining the lessons of the past with a vision for the future.
