Prince William Says Taylor Swift Led Him On Stage ‘Like A Puppy’ As He Remembers Singing With American Star

Prince William admits he obeyed ‘like a puppy’ when glamorous pop star Taylor Swift ordered him onstage for an impromptu performance with Jon Bon Jovi.

Recalling a benefit gala in November 2013 for the homeless organization Centrepoint, a cause first championed by his late mother Princess Diana, the 39-year-old chuckles and says: ‘I can’t believe I’m actually telling you this story… showed up and Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift are at the event, which nearly knocked me off my feet.

“And then I went in, met everyone, a lot of handshaking to do those nights, a lot of chatting. I try to be charming and interactive.

‘Occasionally you don’t have a good day and it’s a little harder to come by.

“As I sat down to watch Jon Bon Jovi perform, I thought, ‘That’s it. My work is done. I’m going to eat in a minute and maybe I can talk to some people, and, you know, I’m now a little off duty.” ‘

But things didn’t go according to that plan.

“I had no idea what would happen next,” he adds. “I’m sitting next to Taylor Swift.

“She’s on my left — and after Jon sings his first song, there’s a pause and she turns to me.

“She puts her hand on my arm, looks me in the eye and says, ‘Come on, William. Let’s go sing.’

“To this day I still don’t know what happened to me. Honestly, even now I cringe at what happened next, and I don’t understand why I gave in.

“But honestly, if Taylor Swift looks you in the eye, touches your arm and says, ‘Come with me…’ I stood up like a puppy and said, ‘Yeah, okay, that sounds like a great idea. Follow you.”

“I walked onto the stage in a trance and about halfway through Jon Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer song I woke up.

“And I think to myself, ‘Am I on stage singing Livin’ On A Prayer when I don’t even know the words?’

“But the young boys and girls from Centrepoint were there, they all loved it and cheered away.

“So I thought, ‘Well, if they enjoy it, then the night is theirs. So damn it. I can’t be the doofus who’s going to ruin it for everyone.’

“And so I try desperately to remember some words and sing as loud as I can.

‘There was a lot of sweat under my black tie. I felt like a swan, trying to keep myself calm on the outside, but inside the little legs are paddling fast.

“A lot of people might think I’m comfortable on stage. When I do speeches and things like that, I’ve done so many now, that’s no problem. But I’m not done singing yet.’

William’s performance on stage – just four months after he first became a father – drew comparisons to the 1978 event when Prince Charles celebrated his 30th birthday by dancing onstage with The Three Degrees.

But it soon becomes apparent that, rather than parading his association with the celebrity world, William has a more serious point.

“Sometimes when you’re taken out of your comfort zone, you have to deal with it,” he says.

“And I think in this lifetime we’ve reached the stage where we micromanage ourselves.

“We do worry about: what do we look like on social media?

‘Who said anything about me? What am I wearing? There’s so much pressure, but I think fooling yourself is okay.

“It’s okay not to take yourself too seriously and have those moments where you let go and just go, ‘You know what? I think this is okay.’ ‘

While William, who has been a patron of Centrepoint since 2005, may shudder at the memory of his performance, Mrs. Swift, 31, who has sold over 200 million records worldwide and is dating English actor Joe Alwyn, compliments it.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday shortly after the event, she said: ‘I could hear his voice and it’s pretty good. A beautiful tone. I’d definitely say he’s star quality and if he ever wants me to sing with him again, I’ll be there.”
