Prince William leaves Oswald’s private club

Prince William looked gleeful as he enjoyed a night out on Wednesday night at the star-studded Christmas party at private members’ club Oswald’s in London.

The royal, 39, was pictured leaving the luxury VIP bash around 7:30pm, with a brief smile as he got into his chauffeured car before returning to Kensington Palace.

Rarely seen on a night out, William accompanied royal friend James Blunt and his wife Emily, as well as Holly Valance and her billionaire husband Nick Candy as they enjoyed an evening at one of London’s most exclusive private clubs.

Famous among wine connoisseurs, the club on Albemarle Street in Mayfair is owned by fellow environmentalist Robin Birley, whose father named his famous members’ club Annabel’s after his sociable wife – Lady Annabel Goldsmith.

William is also said to be a member of 61-year-old Etonian Birley’s secretive club 5 Hertford Street, with an annual fee of £1,800 and where members – reportedly Harry Styles, Margot Robbie, Mick Jagger and numerous royals – are to be recommended by a petitioner and a secondment.

William appeared to be wearing his favorite formal attire of a gray suit when he was seen peering out of his car, appearing cheerful despite his early departure.

The pair put on a glamorous show, with Emily turning heads in a satin suit and matching high heels as they exited the club’s nondescript entrance – where guests can store their own wine.

Hertford Street 5

Robin, the son of Lady Annabel Goldsmith and the late club owner Mark Birley, opened 5 Hertford Street in 2012 and it quickly became London’s most exclusive watering hole.

Set in a labyrinthine mansion, it is furnished as a bohemian country house and members pay a fee of around £2,500 a year.

Among the countless famous faces that have visited are George and Amal Clooney and billionaire Bill Gates.

Minnie Driver also looked elegant as she attended the bash in a chic all-black ensemble and strappy stilettos.

Oswald’s club is one of the most exclusive of London’s members, and they don’t even have a social media account.

Oswald’s attracts the likes of Dame Joan Collins, Priti Patel, David Beckham, the Earl of Snowdon, and it’s where Amber Heard was seen on the Supreme Court in Johnny Depp’s libel suit against a newspaper last year.

Meanwhile, another Robin Birley club – 5HS in Mayfair – is said to be the location of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first date.

In the summer of 2020, after the lockdown, Birley, known as the ‘king of clubs’, spent millions of his own money to lure members back to his fashionable Mayfair nightclubs.

The mogul gave each member of 5 Hertford Street and Oswald’s a free meal worth up to £500 – an offer that lasted until Christmas, with members allowed to bring as many guests as they wanted.

Who is Robin Birley?

Robin, the son of Lady Annabel Goldsmith and the late club owner Mark Birley, was born in 1958 in Westminster.

He has a sister and a brother, who were missing and presumed dead, and who went to Eton.

The entrepreneur founded the successful sandwich chain Birley Sandwiches in the 1980s, before founding 5HS and Oswald’s.

In 2002, he founded Envirotrade to support smallholder farmers in Mozambique, a place close to Harry and William’s hearts.

There are reportedly at least 3,000 members of the two clubs, so it could have cost Birley more than £1.5million.

Robin Birley bears scars on his face left by a tiger that attacked him at a family friend’s private zoo when he was just 12.

The businessman made headlines in 2019 after it was alleged that he financed Boris Johnson’s campaign to become prime minister.

Prince William’s appearance comes amid claims he was furious over a BBC Two documentary that aired ‘baseless’ alleging that he and his staff were telling the media about Harry and Meghan.

The BBC reportedly refused both William and Buckingham Palace and Clarence House – the households of the Queen and Prince of Wales – to preview the two-part programme, although the company did offer a ‘right to reply’.

The first episode of The Princes and The Press detailed media coverage of the young royals from 2012 to 2018 and how they were affected by what happened to their late mother.

It suggested there was “competitiveness” between the various royal households and that, according to Omid Scobie, co-writer of the flattering Harry and Meghan biography, Finding Freedom, negative stories against Meghan had been deliberately leaked to “put her in her place.”
