Prince William put an “inflamed smile” on his wife Kate Middleton’s face yesterday during a “moment of concern”, a body language expert revealed.

As the royals gathered on Christmas Day for the annual walk to St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, there was a brief ‘moment of concern’ for the Princess of Wales, who recently underwent cancer treatment and is slowly returning to public life.

As she made her way past crowds of royal fans carrying bouquets of flowers, Kate, 42, had briefly worn an “unsmiling expression,” suggesting she may be feeling “fatigue or a moment of worry.”

The moment came when William and Kate were briefly separated while the Prince of Wales was busy speaking to the clergy.

But once her knight in shining armor, a quick exchange of glances with William, 42, immediately gave her the reassurance she needed, turning her expression into an “inflamed smile.”

Body language expert Judi James said: ‘She looked across to William and they exchanged a look that was accompanied by an ‘inflamed smile’, meaning her expression responded to his grin with an immediate and wide smile of her own.’

Her presence followed joyful anticipation after what has been a grueling year for the princess, who stunned the world in March 2024 with a shock diagnosis of cancer.

According to Judi, Kate’s instant smile was ‘perhaps the biggest body language signal in the current relationship’ between the Waleses.

She added: ‘His strongest moment of support here came at a distance but it was still a powerful draw between them and with that response smile in place Kate went out to greet the fans looking genuinely happy and touched .’

The moment marked the prince’s continued efforts to ’embrace, cherish and protect his wife through her health challenges’, with his loving care evident in the first reveal video made about Kate’s illness earlier this year.

The princess underwent major abdominal surgery in the hospital, after which doctors announced the news that they had found signs of cancer and advised her to undergo immediate treatment.

She began a gradual and measured return to public life after announcing in September that she had completed a course of preventative chemotherapy.

With Christmas making a crucial appearance in Kate’s slow return, there will undoubtedly have been “a strong desire to create a happy and carefree Christmas day for their three children,” according to Judi.

‘We’ve seen William have to distance himself more from Kate, as he sat in his usual family spot on the other end of the line, watching on Christmas Day as Kate was consumed by the crowd all waiting to give her a hug. of themselves.’

“His smile would be a given, as the late queen’s legacy is all about stoicism, even if there was a glimpse of some edge-to-edge teeth behind his lips that hinted at inner tension, even if he knew that Sophie and even the very dashing and experienced Jonny Thompson were close to Kate during her Christmas outings and kept the most caring eyes on her.’

Nevertheless, supporting her during a fleeting ‘moment of concern’ – William’s distant smile was exactly the remedy needed to reassure Kate and give her the support she needed to carry on.

During yesterday’s appearance, all eyes were on Kate as she looked as positive and radiant as ever, with no indication of the challenging year behind her.

The princess dazzled in a forest green Alexander McQueen coat, which she previously wore during a visit to Leeds in January 2023.

She paired the coat with a matching fascinator and scarf, as well as a pair of black gloves and black boots from Gianvito Rossi to stay warm.

The future queen carried a small Grace Han handbag as she waved to the crowd outside St. Mary Magdalene Church.

Fans have been queuing at Sandringham since early last night, with several people keen to wish Kate and the royal family a Merry Christmas after a particularly difficult twelve months.

King Charles was also diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, and the monarch is still undergoing treatment for the disease.

As King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales walked into the church, the crowd could be heard wishing them a ‘Merry Christmas!’ wished.

Kate’s infectious smile was a testament to her courage in the face of adversity and her work ethic, as the Christmas service is just one of many official public gatherings the Princess has attended since announcing her cancer treatment.

It is also the second time the Wales family has been seen together in public since their appearance at Trooping the Colour, the King’s birthday parade, in June.

Prince William, 42, looked dapper in a navy blue jacket and trousers, perhaps paving the way for his son’s dashing style, with George wearing a similar ensemble to the future king.

Meanwhile, Charlotte formed twins with her mother, with the young princess also wearing a dark green coat.

They were joined by senior members of the royal family, including Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall and Princess Beatrice.

Earlier this month, the Welsh and other members of the royal family gathered for Kate’s special Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey in London.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and their two children Archie and Lilibet remained in Montecito in California, US.

For the Royals, the festivities usually start when everyone arrives on Christmas Eve. The family opens their presents, some of which are gag gifts – one of the royal family’s traditions.

The family then attends services at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas morning. Once they get home, a Christmas lunch is served, followed by games in the afternoon.
