While the two have always tried to keep their relationship private, a report emerged claiming that Prince William left Kate Middleton in tears by canceling an important plan while they were dating.

In her book The Making of a Royal Romance, royal author Katie Nicholl wrote that William and Kate were unable to spend Christmas together in 2006 because, although they had been dating for five years, only married couples were invited at Queen’s Sandringham. celebrations.

So, to make up for spending Christmas Day apart, the couple made “big plans” for the new year.

Yet everything changed when William called Kate on Boxing Day and told her he would stay with his own family instead – although he had promised he would spend time with the Middletons.

The two met at the University of St Andrews in 2001, where they were both studying art history, although William had majored in geography.

It was Kate, who is six months older than William, who was credited with persuading him to continue his studies when he struggled to adapt during his first year.

William was reportedly hesitant to commit to his girlfriend, aware of his own parents’ troubled marriage.

Katie Nicholl wrote: “William had doubts and sat down with his father and grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to rush anything.

In April 2007, news of Kate and William’s split was announced, with sources claiming that the Queen was “disappointed” by the news.

However, there was no cause for concern and they were seen kissing at a military party at Bovington Barracks, Dorset, a few weeks later and the rest is history.

The royal couple announced their engagement to the public in 2010 and married in 2011.

Kate then moved into William’s apartment at Clarence House, where they spent weekends together after he returned from his military duties on Fridays.

“But it made me a stronger person,” she said. “You discover things about yourself that you may not have realized.

“I think you can get pretty wrapped up in a relationship when you’re younger, and I really enjoyed that time for myself too, even though I didn’t think about it at the time.”

Meanwhile, William admitted that taking time away from their relationship has been valuable.

“We were really trying to find our own way and we were growing so there was just a little space left, and it worked out for the best,” he added.
