The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive today for their visit to the Badshahi Mosque in the walled city of Lahore

The Duke and Duchess today visited one of & # 39; the world's largest mosques during their five-day tour of Pakistan today.

Prince William and Kate – dressed in Maheen Khan's green shalwar kameez and headscarf – arrived to see the Badshahi Mosque, the most iconic Islamic site in Lahore, in the heart of the walled city.

The princes will visit the mosque and courtyard before engaging in a discussion with leaders of the faith to understand how they promote inter-religious harmony within their communities.

William follows in the footsteps of both his parents with the visit. His mother Diana, Princess of Wales, visited the site in 1991, and it was also included in the 2006 royal tour of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Previously, the duke and duchess demonstrated their cricket skills while practicing Pakistan's national sport today, laughing while they went in bat and bowl on their five-day tour of the country.

Their Royal Highnesses enthusiastically participated in a competition with children participating in the DOSTI program of the British Council – Dosti means friendship in Urdu – at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

They met a number of Pakistani cricket legends when they heard about the program that promotes sport as an integral part of children's development, encouraging social integration, increased self-esteem and skills development.

William and the Duchess took turns soft balls in a game. There was cheers when the duke hit a six, while Kate played twice after half a dozen balls – but they were intentionally dropped by the catchers.

The competitive couple often compete against sporting events, even during a sailing regatta in the summer. After they both had their turn at the wicket, the couple gave the five boys and girls they were playing with.

The couple also had the opportunity to tell a story to children with finger puppets today when they visited the SOS Children's Village, a center for local orphans in the heart of the city that was founded in 1977.

The SOS Children's Village, which is connected to a school, offers a home and family structure for more than 150 young girls and boys and promotes the development of children into happy, confident and resilient adults.

Kate gives her first speech on the Pakistan tour in SOS Children & # 39; s Village

The Duchess of Cambridge spoke today in the SOS Children's Village in Lahore, which was her first speech during her five-day royal tour with Prince William.

She said: & # 39; We have had such a great time to walk through the village and learn all about your life. We are really moved and touched by what we have seen and by the happy home that you have made.

& # 39; I am aware that many of you have experienced extremely difficult times. But it is inspiring to see how you have used your strength and positivity to help transform the lives of so many young children here. & # 39;

& # 39; William and I have been here in Pakistan this week and have seen on various occasions how family is central to your culture.

& # 39; Parents, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents all play an important role – you have reminded us exactly what family means. You have also shown us that it is not only a term that describes the relationship between blood relatives

& # 39; Instead, it describes those special ties that we share with those that make us feel safe and supported. It's about the quality of those relationships.

& # 39; Earlier this year I spoke about the fact that a village is needed to raise a child. The village that we saw here today is the best representation of that ideal that I could have ever imagined.

& # 39; Together as a village you transform the lives of children and you provide a strong foundation to support all their families.

& # 39; You have created a home where children receive the love, protection, and support that enables them to have a fairer chance in life.

& # 39; Here, women who were once vulnerable now play the most vital role as mothers and it is heartwarming to see that you are not doing this alone. & # 39;

They will later make a trip to the same cancer hospital that Diana visited in the year before her death. Previously, the royals received a red carpet at Lahore airport when they met the city driver.

The SOS Children's Village offers a home and family structure for more than 150 orphans from infants aged up to 18 and promotes its development into happy, confident and resilient adults.

Built over ten hectares, it started with 15 single-family homes, to which four more have since been added. One of the houses was affectionately donated by a man named Mohammed Afzal, who grew up in the village and is now a successful businessman from Hong Kong.

He is one of a number of success stories in which children become bankers, IT specialists, army officer, teachers, textile workers and government employees.

The original site, the first to be built in Pakistan, offered no facilities for education, with children being sent to external schools.

But it soon became clear that the best possible education could only be offered by creating your own school on the site.

The couple started a musical story session and got brightly colored finger puppets to play with.

& # 39; It's very nice to be here, & # 39; said Wiliam, & my name is William … my name is William. How old are you?

After asking each child's age, he asked a little boy: & How old do you think I am? & # 39;

& # 39; Twenty-one, & # 39; offered the child. & # 39; I take twenty-one, that's good! & # 39; he laughed. & # 39; I am a little older than that. Can you guess?

& # 39; I have my own children. A little boy named Louis and then there is Charlotte and George, who is six. He's almost as old as you. & # 39;

The couple then entered into a private meeting with seven children living in one of the guest houses and their & # 39; housemother & # 39; live.

Kate started an address in a greeting in Urdu, before wishing the three young people a happy birthday.

How Lahore has a turbulent history that goes back nearly 800 years

Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan and the capital of the Punjab province, has a history of violence that dates back to 1241 when it was fired by a Mongol army.

The same troops repeatedly attacked it until 1398 when it fell under the control of the Turkish conqueror Timur.

But in 1524 it was conquered by the troops of the Mughal Bābur, which began its golden age under the Mughal dynasty when it became a royal residence.

By the 18th century, it was an Iranian empire outpost before it was associated with the rise of the Sikhs.

But after the death of ruler Ranjit Singh in 1839, it went under British rule in 1849 and did not become independent until 1947.

The historical sights include the 36-hectare Lahore fortress, the huge mosque in Badshahi and the Shalimar garden.

Today, more than six million people live in the financial hub, where major industries include textiles and rubber.

In her first speech of the tour, the Duchess said: & # 39; We had such a great time to walk through the village and learn all about your life.

& # 39; We are truly moved and touched by what we have seen and by the happy home that you have made.

'Here, women who were once vulnerable, now play the most vital of roles as mothers and it is most heartening to see that you are not doing this alone.'

Iman, who has been at the Village for three years, said: 'It very nice to meet the Prince and Princess. I am so happy and thankful to have them to celebrate my birthday.'

She added: 'Her Urdu was very good.'

Umma Kashmir, 39, was left at the village at three months old and never knew her parents.

'I was here for 25 years and am now married with three children and I have done my PHD and lecture at university in management sciences, ' she said proudly.

'I never saw my parents and I never asked who they were. This was my family, they loved and cared for me. I didn't feel the need to find out.

'I was really delighted to be invited and to meet them. They seemed very impressed by what they saw here. It was an honour.'

William, accompanied by his wife, Kate, travelled from the capital Islamabad to the bustling city of Lahore today, where they will later make a trip to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.

The couple were greeted this morning by officials and a posy of flowers before going into the airport terminal for a private meeting with the Governor of Lahore, and the Duchess looked ethereal in ivory as she arrived.

Kate, wearing a shalwar kameez by Gul Ahmed and a shawl by Maheem Khan, kept her husband, Prince William, waiting for a few moments before they stepped off their official RAF Voyager plane.

Later, at the state-of-the-art cancer facility in downtown Lahore, they will visit the pediatric ward to spend time with patients being treated at the hospital and talking to some of their families.

The hospital was built by the now Pakistani prime minister, former cricket player Imran Khan, in memory of his deceased mother who died of cancer in 1985.

During his mother's illness, he witnessed the fate of poor cancer patients in the hospitals of his country and promised to build a facility that would be accessible to everyone regardless of status.

The center opened its doors in 1994 and in February 1996, 18 months before her tragic death, visited Diana, Princess of Wales, accompanied by Mr. Khan and his former wife, Jemima Goldsmith, a close friend of the royal.

Diana was on a private visit to Pakistan to raise funds for the hospital – as well as meet the family of her great love, Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan – but had been advised not to undertake the trip due to political tensions with the UK.

She was movingly photographed cradling a young patient receiving cancer treatment at the time, which she later cited as one of her most cherished images.

The couple will also undertake a variety of other engagements across Lahore, known widely across Pakistan as the country's city of culture.
