Spectator with Pride rainbow flag storms World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay amid row over Qatar’s anti-LGBT laws
A protester carrying a Pride flag marched onto the pitch tonight during Portugal’s World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay, in violation of the country’s anti-LGBT laws.
The man was wearing a blue superman t-shirt with the words ‘Save Ukraine’ on the front as he stormed onto the pitch in the second half of the group stage match.
The back of the t-shirt also read ‘respect Iranian women’, referring to the anti-regime protests in Iran in recent months.
He was chased by security across the field holding the Pride flag over his head before finally being grabbed and taken away.
The game umpire picked up the Pride flag after it fell to the turf as the man was bundled away to allow play to continue.
Being gay is illegal in Qatar and carries a prison sentence of up to seven years, sparking huge controversy surrounding the tournament.
