Preston caretaker manager Mike Marsh has resigned from his role just five days after taking charge.

Marsh’s shock announcement comes after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Swansea City.

He had been given temporary responsibility for the club alongside coaching staff Peter Murphy and Ched Evans, following the departure of Ryan Lowe after just one game.

Lowe left his post at the Championship club after the opening game of the season (a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United) but had been in charge since 2021.

North End defeated the Black Cats in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night but were beaten 3-0 in Wales by the Swans.

Marsh did not turn up for Saturday’s post-match press duties, having informed club chiefs he would not be applying for the full-time role, nor would he be coaching the team any further.

The club confirmed his departure shortly after, publishing a statement saying: ‘On Monday 12 August, it was announced that Mike Marsh, along with Peter Murphy and Ched Evans, would take charge of the first team matches against Sunderland and Swansea City.

‘Following today’s defeat in South Wales, Mike has thanked the club for the opportunity to take charge on an interim basis but has no desire to apply for the job on a permanent basis or to take the club forward.

‘Mike will therefore leave the club with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.
