Two unnamed footballers, both aged 19 and playing for the same club, were arrested over the weekend after the alleged victim reported the allegations to police.

The incident is said to have taken place on Friday night and the victim filed the complaint hours later.

Police reportedly spoke to a player on suspicion of assault and complicity in a rape at his club stadium before he was formally arrested and detained overnight.

The second player was arrested the next day and questioned on rape charges. Both players have been released on bail, pending further investigations.

The Midlands team are the first to break their silence since news of the arrests broke on Tuesday afternoon, sharing that they were issuing a statement out of concern for the “welfare of the players.”

“A news article published yesterday has sparked inappropriate speculation online about the identities of two people allegedly under investigation,” the statement read.

“While we would not normally comment on ongoing police matters, to protect the welfare of our young players we believe it is necessary to confirm that the allegations do not relate to anyone at Wolves.”

Both players have since been suspended by their club while the investigation continues.
