The old cliché is that home is where the heart is and for many in the Premier League that really is the case.

A look at the Premier League away fixtures makes for fascinating reading, with some sides finding it much more difficult on the road than they do in the comforts of home.

Take Liverpool for example. Anfield are widely regarded as one of the most intimidating grounds in the Premier League to play on and, despite their shaky start to the 2022/23 season, have the third best home form to date.

Then realize that Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were beaten outright 3-1 at Brentford on Monday evening, are in 12th place when it comes to the away game.

Klopp’s side have won just two of their eight away games this season, scoring 13 goals and picking up just eight points.

Their only away wins this season came against Tottenham Hotspur in November and Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

But while Liverpool can prove chalk and cheese at home and away, at Brighton it’s quite the opposite story.

The Seagulls absolutely love their travels and seemingly prefer playing away to home – if the results are anything to go by.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who beat an unfortunate Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park in their last appearance, have won just three of their eight home games.

In the home standings, they are just three points ahead of Everton, who are in the relegation zone of the home table.

Much of Brighton’s success has been down to the counter-attack and that is perhaps one of the reasons why they improve dramatically away from home when they can take the pressure and jump into transition.

Southampton, Wolves, Everton, Leicester, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Tottenham are all teams that score higher away from home than at home.

One of the more intriguing sides of the home/away tables are those who, like Liverpool, are better off at home.

Ahead of last week’s trip to Chelsea, Man City were sixth in the league table; stark contrast to number 1 at home. The win has moved them up to second as they recover their form in the title race.

However, there is no denying that Arsenal are the best in the league away from home and perhaps that is proof that they can go the distance in this title race.

In recent seasons it has been their fragility on the road – last season many think back to losing their top four chances to Newcastle – that has been costly.

But Arsenal have taken 22 points from nine games and lost just once from nine games on the road.

Newcastle, one of the most outstanding teams of the season so far, have been a model of consistency on both fronts. They are fourth at home and third when chasing a Champions League berth.

The question is whether the trend of home/away differences will continue in 2023.

Since the resumption of Premier League football after the end of the World Cup, there have been 15 away wins and just eight home wins.

For teams like Brighton, that sounds like music to the ears. For teams like Liverpool, a lack of results for the home side can be alarming.
