Australia’s premier football competition has been branded “village” after an A-League team’s ill-fated attempt to score a goal went viral last weekend.

Star winger Josh Nisbet has come under fire on social media after failing to break his goal drought during the 2023/24 season in a series of mind-boggling errors against Melbourne Victory.

Despite looking fatigued, the Central Coast midfielder had a clear chance to double his team’s lead during the 1-0 win at AAMI Park on Sunday.

The 24-year-old found himself with an open shot on goal, but somehow failed to score not once, but twice late in the match.

It came in a tense match in which three players were shown red cards, and Victory had a chance to salvage a tie in stoppage time.

Melbourne called on their goalkeeper to attack in a last-ditch effort to equalize, but when that play failed, Nisbet had an open goal to attack.

What happened next was almost comical.

Nisbet had two golden opportunities from the front, but was unable to convert them late in the match due to fatigue.

The ball reached Nisbet perfectly, who had a clear path to the goal from 30 meters.

The Mariners are here. Paul Izzo is out of his goal!’ Channel 10’s Simon Hill said in a commentary.

“Josh Nisbet just has to keep his head here.”

Despite effortlessly dribbling into the six-yard box, his attempt to score was blocked by Victory’s Jake Brimmer.

Nisbet’s first right-footed shot was deflected and the subsequent rebound hit the crossbar.

Despite the error, the Mariners earned their first victory over Victory at AAMI Park.

However, the social media world has not forgotten, and a clip of Nisbet’s ruling has been viewed more than 200,000 times, overshadowing the team’s victory in online discussions.

“It’s not match-fixing, it’s pure lack of will and inability,” fired one fan in response to the shocking series of loose balls.

‘There are no words to express how atrocious that play by Nisbet was. “He had a million chances to score and, as is typical of A-League talent, he took a thousand touches and waited until the defense was there to shoot,” posted another.

‘How is it possible that Josh Nisbet didn’t score at the time of death? “Seriously, that shows the lack of talent in the entire A-League,” another commenter wrote.

“Nisbet should get a red for that,” fumed another A-League fan.

Cruelly for Nisbet, the two failures mean he will be goalless for the season.

It comes just after receiving the PFA Player of the Month award for January. At that time he led the league in assists.

‘I feel honored to receive this award. “It’s voted for by my teammates and the opposition, so it’s great that they think I’m doing very well this season,” Nisbet said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team and the club, we are doing very well at the moment and I couldn’t do it without them.

Former A-League defender Robbie Cornthwaite called for Nisbet to be called up to Graham Arnold’s Socceroos squad in 2023 and, despite the viral moments against Victory, he remains one of the best players in the A-League.
